  1. Advantage Aston Villa

    FT: Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

Thanks for your company this evening. Aston Villa are now just a home draw away from a Wembley play-off final... But Middlesbrough won't be giving up just yet.

You can read Matt Newsum's first-leg report from the Riverside here.

The Championship play-off semi-finals will resume on Monday, as Fulham host Derby, before Villa and Boro meet again on Tuesday.

Do be sure to join us again for those two second legs.

But before then, you can now join my colleague Owen Phillips for Coventry v Notts County in the League Two play-offs, which is getting under way shortly, right here.

From me, it's good night. Cheers.

  2. A 'tough ask' for Boro

    FT: Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

    Matt Newsum

BBC Sport at the Riverside Stadium

The fist-pumping, veins-popping celebrations from Robert Snodgrass are evidence of the delight amongst the Villa squad, as they went to celebrate with their raucous mob in the corner.

Unsurprisingly their fans are delighted, not even tempered by the prospect of a tedious cross-country journey back to the second city on a Saturday night.

Middlesbrough's supporters clapped them off the field as they headed for the dressing rooms. Their performance improved as time ticked on but a lack of genuine, bona fide chances were their downfall.

If anyone can instill an underdog mentality going to Villa Park on Tuesday, then it's Tony Pulis. No one will be writing Boro off yet, but it's a tough ask all the same.

  3. Post update

    FT: Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

    Mile Jedinak goal

Here was the goal that separates these two sides after the first leg, as Mile Jedinak's header gives Villa a lead to take back to the West Midlands.

  4. 'We'll take that'

    FT: Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

Villa boss Steve Bruce tells Sky Sports:

"We had to defend very well. We went too deep in the second half and it was very difficult, but we'll take that and we look forward to Tuesday.

    "It's a small advantage."

  5. FULL-TIME

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

The whistle goes and it's a fine-looking result for Aston Villa, at the halfway stage in this semi-final. Their fans celebrate.

Boro's time is almost up now in this first leg.

  7. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

As Villa's John Terry gets up again after receiving some treatment, the referee is assuring Boro's complainers that he will be adding some more time on than the originally-signalled five minutes.

  8. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

    John Terry

John Terry goes down holding his head and play will pause as the physios comes on.

  11. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

    Matt Newsum

BBC Sport at the Riverside Stadium

The throb of the police helicopter rotors are making the stand shudder here at the Riverside, where Aston Villa are on course for a morale-boosting win to take back to Villa Park.

Middlesbrough have looked sharper and more threatening with Patrick Bamford on the field, and that has given the supporters belief in the fight with just added time to go.

  12. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

A huge roar of encouragement from the home fans greets the announcement of five minutes of added time.

  13. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

We're in to the final minute of normal time.

To remind you, while Villa do lead, the away goals rule does not apply in the play-offs, so this isn't a total disaster for Boro as it stands.

  14. SUBSTITUTION (Villa)

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

Glenn Whelan replaces the injured Ahmed Elmohamady, which is a concern for Villa ahead of Tuesday's second leg.

Birkir Bjarnason switches to left-back for the final few minutes.

Moments later, George Friend blazes over the bar for the home side.

  15. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

Villa are temporarily down to 10 men as Ahmed Elmohamady trudges off.

  16. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

Fabio has looked bright since coming on for Boro. He wins them a throw-in, near the corner flag.

But play has to stop for a moment, as Villa's Ahmed Elmohamady is holding his hamstring. That'll halt any small momentum that the hosts may have wanted to build up. Villa will just hope Elmohamady is alright.

  17. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

    Middlesbrough players down

Boro look a bit more dangerous since the introduction of Patrick Bamford. Their latest half-chance falls to Muhamed Besic, but he fires wide from the edge of the box.
