FT: Coventry City 1-1 Notts County

Quite often the first leg of a play-off match is tight and tentative. None of that between Coventry and Notts tonight.

It was a cracker and had plenty of talking points.

Have a read of Ged Scott's match report. He was our man at the Ricoh Arena tonight.

Thanks for joining us. See you next time.

FT: Coventry 1-1 Notts County

Coventry goalscorer Marc McNulty told Sky Sports:

"You see them given and sometimes you don't, but it was great to stick the penalty away.

"I'd picked where I was going and I never changed my mind. I could have had a couple of goals, I hit the post and they also defended a header I had well.

"That was unfortunate but these things happen."

FT: Coventry City 1-1 Notts County

Notts County full-back Dan Jones told Sky Sports:

"Coventry came out fast. They hit the post and we rode our luck but we defended brilliantly. There was a lot of drama, especially at the end with the penalty which I thought was a little dubious. I thought he [Matt Tootle] won the ball but you just have to get on with it."

FT: Coventry 1-1 Notts County

And that's that.

A wonderfully entertaining match, which ends in huge controversy as Coventry snatch a draw from a penalty that simply didn't look like one at all.

Marc McNulty or Coventry won't mind about that, though...

Coventry 1-1 Notts County

We are over the allotted amount of injury time. Notts on the attack.

Coventry 1-1 Notts County

Former England and Manchester United man Alan Smith will get the briefest of run-outs for the visitors. He is on for the injured Jonathan Forte. Notts are hanging on.

Coventry 1-1 Notts County

Notts goalscorer Jonathan Forte is clutching his hamstring. He walks along for a few yards looking concerned and then falls to the floor.

That must be his night done - and possibly his season.

Coventry 1-1 Notts County

Will we get an extra-time winner?

Notts boss Kevin Nolan is absolutely seething. His post-match chat will be lively to say the least.

Even more so if Coventry grab a winner. Jonson Clarke-Harris pokes the ball wide after some great work by Marc McNulty out wide

Coventry 1-1 Notts County

Coventry are pressing for a winner. Notts have lost their heads a bit. They are furious with the penalty decision.

Jonson Clarke-Harris shoots just wide.

There will be six extra minutes.

Marc McNulty (pen)

Calmly smashed in by Marc McNulty.

It's his 27th goal of the season, and Coventry are level.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Notts looked comfortable and that looks controversial.

Tom Bayliss goes over in the area under the challenge of Matt Tootle, who looked to get the ball fairly cleanly, and Coventry have a spot-kick.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Another change for the Sky Blues.

Max Biamou makes way for academy product Jonson Clarke-Harris. Less than seven minutes to play.

Can Coventry find a leveller?

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

A wasteful ball into the box by Jack Grimmer. He plays a hopeful cross in from the Coventry right, but it's easy pickings for Notts goalkeeper Adam Collin as it floats gently into his arms.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Jonathan Forte
Rex Features

Jonathan Forte has been mightily impressive for the Magpies tonight - even without the goal.

His experience has been crucial and he has worked himself relentlessly. The striker chases back, wins possession and wastes some precious time.

Kevin Nolan will appreciate the "game management".

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Liam Noble has had to cover plenty of ground tonight, but he can rest up for the closing stages. Michael O'Connor replaces him in the Notts midfield.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Notts then counter and Dominic Hyam is left with no option but to tug back Jonathan Forte. A booking but the free-kick is easily cleared.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

A great run by Jack Grimmer down the Coventry right brings a mistimed sliding challenge from Jorge Grant.

He is booked and from the free-kick a header on target is deflected over by Dan Jones...

Tom Bayliss

The rain finally seems to have stopped here and the pitch is now throwing up less surface water, but you still have to give credit to the two teams for the way they have kept their heads and at least tried to play football on it.

And also to referee Gavin Ward for apparently making a few allowances for the conditions.

It has been a belting game for the 17,404 fans who have braved it - even if the majority of them wearing sky blue are currently a bit unhappy!

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Coventry look to make something happen.

Teenage striker Jordan Ponticelli comes on. Twenty-year-old midfielder Jordan Shipley comes off.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Coventry's Marc McNulty now threatens to get in behind after a lovely pass by Tom Davies.

The Scottish striker is crowded out, though. Notts have nullified him well after his superb start to the match when they couldn't get near him and he hit the post with a low shot.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Great wing play by Tom Bayliss at the other end. The Coventry youngster jinks away from a couple of defenders but unleashes a shot wide of the post.

Both sides are threatening. It's richly entertaining, this.

Can Mark Robins's side cook up an equaliser?

Mark Robins

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Dan Jones is again involved as Notts break on the right. This time he picks out Jon Stead in the middle but the striker's delicate attempted first-time lay-off is too heavy and Coventry clear.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Notts boss Kevin Nolan is barking out some orders while we have a break in play.

A victory here would be a huge boost for the second leg on Friday.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Coventry have regained their composure again. It just went a bit ugly for a while after County's goal.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Jonathan Forte scores
Rex Features

Jonathan Forte has scored 10 goals this season. Three of them have come against Coventry. He enthusiastically chases a long ball over the top but it skids through to keeper Lee Burge.

We have 30 minutes to play.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Notts make their first change. The attacking talents of Lewis Alessandra are introduced. Matthew Virtue makes way.

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Notts really have the bit between their teeth now. Jon Stead floats a ball into the box but it comes to nothing. The visitors are committing plenty of men forward. They fancy a second goal here.

What has Coventry boss Mark Robins got up his sleeve?

Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Coventry suddenly look a bit ragged and Notts threaten a second but the Sky Blues just hack it away.

Jorge Grant shows his quality, skipping inside onto his right foot but his strike does not have enough juice on it and is easily saved by keeper Lee Burge.

Game on.

Notts County boss Kevin Nolan is smiling now - his side have a lead at the Ricoh and a foothold in the tie, with the second leg to come at Meadow Lane on Friday.

GOAL: Coventry 0-1 Notts County

Jonathan Forte

A sensational goal by Jonathan Forte.

Dan Jones chases what seems a lost cause down the left flank, slides in and wins possession against the odds.

He then has the composure to drill the ball into the near post, where Forte back-flicks the it into the near post. Great improvisation, and County lead.

Jonathan Forte celebrates

Coventry 0-0 Notts County

Coventry keeper Lee Burge punches a long ball clear and there's a nervy moment before the Sky Blues break and win a corner.

Jack Grimmer heads the set-piece just over from six yards. We start where we left off. Chances at both ends already.

Coventry 0-0 Notts County

Here we go again at the Ricoh Arena.

Tranmere promoted to League Two

Result: Boreham Wood 1-2 Tranmere

And there was an eventful National League play-off final.

Tranmere Rovers beat Boreham Wood in today's Wembley meeting - but they did it the hard way.

Rovers had defender Liam Ridehalgh sent off in the first minute for a lunging challenge, but Micky Mellon's side prevailed despite playing almost all of the match with 10 men.

James Norwood scored Rovers' winner to confirm their return to League Two after three seasons outside the EFL.

Coventry 0-0 Notts County

That's been good fun. Frantic at times with a surprising amount of quality considering the awful weather and the fact there are puddles all over the place.

Both sides have had good chances. But we still don't have a goal in either of our League Two play-off games so far today.

There is still 45 minutes to play in this one though.

Max Biamou

Coventry 0-0 Notts County

There will be some busy groundstaff during the interval.

Pitchforks at the ready folks. The rain needs to be drained. You have 15 minutes to do your thing.

Two minutes of stoppage time has just started.

Coventry 0-0 Notts County

That has to be the wrong option.

It looked like Tom Bayliss wasn't the intended target but he gets in on the right-hand side of Notts County's defence and just plays the ball across the face of goal. It was neither a cross or a shot.

Coventry 0-0 Notts County

A bright free-kick by the Sky Blues. They work the ball short, play it in to Marc McNulty's feet and the Scot turns and hits an effort wide.

He's causing plenty of problems.
