    BBC Monitoring

    The world through its media

The controversialall-male billboard erected in Tehran to mark the World Cup has been replaced by a new one where women can be seen in the distance.

The caption remains the same: "Together we are champions; one nation, one heartbeat"

The replacement comes after the first poster was heavily criticised on social media.

One user posted a video of woman dressed sporing attire in the city of Bushehr to show support for the national team.

  6. Mourinho and Putin - what actually happened

    Simon Stone

    BBC Sport

Russian president Vladimir Putin was pictured with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho at yesterday’s opening World Cup game at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Apparently, the shot came about after one of Putin’s assistants asked if Mourinho, who is working at the tournament as a pundit for Russia Today, would pose.

Once agreement was given, the shot was set up.

    Not one word was exchanged.

Unsurprisingly the Russian media are jubilant this morning after their 5-0 thumping of Saudi Arabia in the opening game.

A presenter on state TV said Russia is now “at the centre of the grand football universe” while the president of Lokomotiv club, Ilya Gerkus, was quoted saying “Russia can now easily win the World Cup”.

However, many on social media could not resist commenting on the potential geopolitical consequences of the matched being dubbed ‘El Gasico’.

Gifs of President Putin shaking hands with Saudi Crown Prince bin Salman’s were accompanied by captions such as: “Ok, crude oil $100 by this Christmas”

John, London: The World Cup just isn't the same without a national newspaper giving out prayer mats to help an England player's broken metatarsal. The best we've had this time round is 'Marcus Rashford recovers in plenty of time for first game from slightly sore thigh'.

Keith: I have to say if there is one thing I have liked most about this England team so far it's the bond they all have. A relaxed environment is a change to previous tournaments!

Kennedy: Can we start a World Cup thread of comedy tournament players names crossed with a foodstuff?? predominantly a fruit or vegetable... I'll start - Mo Salad.... Harry Sugarkane! Etc...

  17. Good news

Marcus Rashford was back in training earlier.
