    Arsenal celebrate goal

Arsenal earned an important win against Chelsea to keep themselves in the race for the Premier League top four.

The victory moves the Gunners to within three points of fourth-placed Chelsea and back above Manchester United, who had gone fifth by beating Brighton.

Alexandre Lacazette put Arsenal ahead in the 14th minute when he made the most of a poor Hector Bellerin cross with a fine first touch before turning and beating Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga at his near post with a fierce strike.

Arsenal's intense pressing hampered Chelsea's ability to play the ball from the back, particularly in the first half, and the Gunners deservedly added a second through captain Laurent Koscielny in the 39th minute.

Chelsea failed to mark well enough at another set-piece and Koscielny missed a free header but the ball fortuitously looped in off his shoulder.

Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea struggled to create in the first half but did hit the post on the stroke of half-time through Marcos Alonso's header at a corner.

They posed greater threat in the second half but failed to have a shot on target until the 82nd minute as Arsenal's defence, led by the excellent Koscielny, held firm.

  3. Sarri criticises his Chelsea players

    Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea

    Chelsea

"It seems we really struggle to get ourselves up for these games."

That is an incredible sentence from Sarri.

This is a London derby we are talking about. Away at Arsenal, in a massive game that could see them end the season in the Champions League places or not.

  4. Chelsea approach 'unacceptable' - Sarri

    Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, speaking to BT Sport: "I’m really angry about the approach that we adopted today. You can find yourself in difficulties from time to time, but we need to react to those difficulties a lot better than we did today.

"It’s an approach we can't really accept. It was the same in our game against Tottenham.

"We thought we’d overcome that problem, but it seems we really struggle to get ourselves up for these games at times. I don’t mind losing but I don’t like losing in this manner."

Oli: Don't understand all this madness about sacking Sarri, it's a poor result and we need a good striker that's all. Jorginho is quality, Kante can play on the right, Hazard will move back to the wing and we'll continue to push for top four.

Kwame Manu-Antwi: I blame Chelsea board for swapping a serial winner like Conte for Sarri who won nothing anywhere.

Matt Johnson: Take Kovacic off but to leave Jorginho on says it all, he offers nothing. Sarri needs to realise fast that Kante is better in front of the back four. Conte was clever enough to move to a back three a couple of seasons back but Sarri continues to be stubborn/loyal to Jorginho.

  6. 'I'm really angry'

    Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri, with an interpreter standing next to him, is speaking to the media. "I'm really angry," are Sarri's first words in Italian.

He has often given interviews in English but wants to make sure his message is the correct one.

Ben: ONE shot on goal for @ChelseaFC today. Sarriball has run its course. We need more life up front, and everywhere on the pitch, frankly.

Shane Morrison: Well done Arsenal best team by far showed passion hunger creativity three things Chelsea didn't show once. Sarri is on a tight rope now.

Jonathan Moeller: Surely Sarri should maybe experiment with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Play kante in his proper position where he is best and then play Drinkwater alongside him. That midfield won the league. Jorginho isn’t premier league quality and Kante looks average in CM.

  8. Chelsea win 'can help us be optimistic'

    Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Unai Emery, speaking to BT Sport: "We wanted to win for our fans. The difference in the table [between ourselves and Chelsea] was six points, but this victory can help us be optimistic. We can be happy after today, but we need to take things game by game.

"We need to find the right balance at home and away. At home you can show all the supporters what you can do.

"The difference between last match and today’s game is very big, even with the same players, so we need to find that balance."

  9. 'We worked and fought all game'

    Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea

    Arsenal

Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette, who scored the game's first goal, speaking to BT Sport: "We did what the coach asked of us. We worked and fought all game, so it’s good. It was not easy for us, but I’m happy to score and help the team.

"We are now three points from Chelsea so we are still in the race and we’ll fight until the end."

  10. 'The commitment was amazing'

    Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea

    Arsenal

Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny, speaking to BT Sport: "Today we needed to win. We made a mistake last week [at West Ham] so today's game was a six-pointer. If we lose we will be nine points [off Chelsea] and if we win the gap will be just three points.

"We're still in the race for the top four. I think the commitment today was amazing from all the boys. We showed on the pitch which way we want to go together. It’s good to play like this because in football it’s not easy to win.

"I’m happy to score because it’s very important for the team. When we talk about clean sheets it’s not just about the defenders. Today we showed everyone we are together. The strikers worked hard too, which helps the rest of the team."
