  1. Good night

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Valencia

Well, it looks very much like the European dream is over for Celtic for another season after losing at home to Valencia. It really was a quite dismal showing from the Scottish champions.

There is a return leg to come in Spain next Thursday and we'll have that one covered as well after another busy weekend in the Premiership.

  2. Killie up next for Celtic

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Valencia

It's back to league business for Celtic on Sunday with a visit to Kilmarnock and then there is the second leg of this Europa League tie at the Mestalla.

"It's always a tough game for us," says Brendan Rodgers on the prospect of going to Rugby Park.

  3. A bad night at the office for Celtic

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Valencia

    Peter Houston

Former Scotland assistant manager on BBC Sportsound

    Celtic's Jozo Simunovic at full-time
Quote Message: As a manager, you can't legislate for so many players freezing on the night
  4. 'Concentration is so important at this level'

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Valencia

More from Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers:

"Valencia are a team that wait on your mistakes and unfortunately we made too many mistakes, gave the ball away under no pressure.

"Concentration is so important at this level. If you bring pressure on yourself, it makes it difficult. You need to do the basics well.

"If you take away the two mistakes, there weren't many other chances.

"You have to have the personality to say if you make a mistake you go again but we became safe - we start going sideways and backwards - and it was difficult for us to penetrate.

"We have good players and we may have a few back for next week."

  5. 'We just made too many mistakes'

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Valencia

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells BT Sport: “It was a disappointing game to lose considering we made a good start. We were bright, had a good intensity in our pressing and we circulated the ball well.

“At this level you have to concentrate and you can’t put pressure on ourselves. Tonight we put pressure on ourselves.

“But we made too many mistakes, we weren’t creating that passing and it got away from us. When you present those chances to a team with that quality they can punish you.

“It’s a disappointing performance in the end. When you make the number of mistakes we made with simple passes you become a wee bit safe. And that was the story of our game, really.

"It’s a big challenge for us but if we get that first goal (next week) it maybe gives us hope in the tie.”

  6. GET INVOLVED

Murphy O Alexander: "All I wanted tonight was for Celtic to give them a game, didn't care about the result because let's be honest they don't deserve to be in this round, but oh no they couldn't even do that. No fight, no skill, no nothing, they couldn't even string 2 passes together."

Ronnie Allan: "Too good for Scotland, not good enough for anywhere else."

  7. 'Celtic full-backs copped out'

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Valencia

    Peter Houston

Former Scotland assistant manager on BBC Sportsound

Quote Message: Every single member of the team was cheap. The full-backs copped out by going back the way all the time. That’s the safety option. There was no penetration.
  8. 'Celtic just did not perform'

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Valencia

    Pat Bonner

Former Celtic goalkeeper on BBC Sportsound

Quote Message: Brendan Rodgers will be frustrated. I had confidence in the way Celtic were playing, the way they had started the year, but they just did not perform
  9. 'We have nothing to lose'

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Valencia

A crestfallen Celtic captain Scott Brown tells BT Sport: “It was a tough night for us to be honest.

"We tried to play out from the back but our passing wasn’t the best throughout the whole team.

"We will go and try and press them high up the park and force them into making mistakes.

"It just wasn’t meant to be and we will go again next Thursday. We have nothing to lose over there."

  10. Redemption on the road?

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Valencia

Can Celtic pull off a minor miracle at the Mestalla next week? On the evidence of tonight, you'd have to say not likely.

Brendan Rodgers' away record in Europe is five wins, five draws and 10 defeats.

  11. 'An absolute canter for the Spaniards'

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Valencia

    Tom English

BBC Scotland's chief sports writer at Celtic Park

That was as easy a win as Valencia could have possibly hoped for in their wildest dreams. An absolute canter for the Spaniards. Celtic were really poor. Didn’t turn up. They should be bitterly disappointed, This was a non-performance.

    Valencia celebrate
  12. Post update

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Valencia

The Celtic players are disconsolate as they applaud the rapidly dwindling number of fans inside the stadium.

Not many would register pass marks this evening.

  13. FULL-TIME Celtic 0-2 Valencia

A sobering night for Celtic as Valencia ease to victory.

The home side barely registered as an attacking threat and defensive lapses gifted two goals to the Spanish side.

Ruben Sobrino knocks in the second goal on a comfortable night for Valencia

  14. Supporters heading for the exits

    Celtic 0-2 Valencia

    Alasdair Lamont

BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic Park

Celtic Park is beginning to empty rapidly, with many fans long since having accepted defeat in this first leg and perhaps the tie overall. It’s certainly a massive task they face to overturn Valencia’s commanding lead.

  15. YELLOW CARD Toljan (Celtic)

    Celtic 0-2 Valencia

Jeremy Toljan goes into the referee's book as the fourth official signals three minutes of stoppage time.

  16. Post update

    Celtic 0-2 Valencia

James Forrest has time and space to pick a cross from the right but over-hits it horribly, with Odsonne Edouard the only Celtic player in the penalty area.

It's been one of those night for the Scottish champions.

  17. Post update

    Celtic 0-2 Valencia

Five minutes to go. Celtic are going down with a whimper here. They just can't penetrate the well-organised ranks of the visitors.

  18. YELLOW CARD Kondogbia (Valencia)

    Celtic 0-2 Valencia

Referee Ovidiu Alin Hategan is suddenly card crazy as he gives a puzzled looking Geoffrey Kondogbia a caution for time wasting.

  19. YELLOW CARD Burke (Celtic)

    Celtic 0-2 Valencia

The first booking comes with 10 minutes to go as Celtic forward Oli Burke is rather harshly punished for a high boot, with Ezequiel Garay stooping to head the ball at the halfway line.
