  1. Gallagher strikes to send Preston top

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Preston's move up the Championship has been based around their excellent home form, but they proved today they have what it takes to win on the road too.

It wasn't a pretty game by any stretch of the imagination and from early on it looked as if one goal would decide it.

That goal came from the penalty spot after 58 minutes and was enough to defeat a battling but blunt Charlton.

Thanks for joining me this afternoon, and if you missed the action never fear, our match report is already here.

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

    Preston celly

Preston are top of the Championship!

Paul Gallagher's second-half penalty is the difference between the two sides at the Valley.

After a fairly even opening period, the visitors certainly took charge of the second and took their opening which came after a foul on Jayden Stockley by Jason Pearce.

Charlton kept at it but in truth, never really created any openings to put Declan Rudd under pressure. It was Ben Purrington who had their best chances with one in each half but he couldn't convert either.

Preston are sitting pretty at the top, while Charlton sit in tenth.

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Macauley Bonne booked for dissent as the clock ticks down.

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

That could be that for Charlton as Preston have a goal kick.

    Seconds left...

  5. Post update

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

    So close!!!

Rudd flaps at the corner and it drops to Purrington in a mass of bodies but he can only poke it wide with the goal at his mercy!!

  6. Post update

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Three minutes of injury time left for Charlton to find an equaliser.

    They have a corner...

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Declan Rudd booked for taking his time with a goal kick and pushing the referee's patience a touch too far.

  8. Post update

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Swift counter-attack by Preston and Barkhuizen's effort is well-saved by Phillips.

Pearson would have had an open goal had he squared it...

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Final roll of the dice for Charlton.

Beram Kayal is replaced by Erhun Oztumer.

Not long to go... but wait - there will be SEVEN minutes injury time!

  10. Post update

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Block by Chris Solly as Sean Maguire tried to replicate Josh King's goal against Manchester United yesterday.

Sustained pressure from Preston and they'll be happy to keep playing in Charlton's half.

  11. Post update

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

    Preston almost have their second!

Jayden Stockley arrives with perfect timing and connects well with a header which fires over the bar at pace!

It looked as if Phillips may have pulled off a great save at first, but on the replay it clips the top of the bar and goes over.

Can Charlton make him rue that miss?

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

On-loan Chelsea man Conor Gallagher could prove to be the catalyst for any Charlton revival.

He goes past Barkhuizen who pulls him back and promptly receives a caution.

Chuks Aneke almost makes contact with Kayal's free-kick at the far post but can't quite stretch enough.

    Better from the Addicks.

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Lee Bowyer's side have struggled to make chances in the second-half but he still has one change up his sleeve.

A point would be a good one for Charlton now.

Jayden Stockley swings a leg at the lively Conor Gallagher as the midfielder breaks and he's also given a caution - Preston's third.

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Darnell Fisher joins team-mate Ben Pearson in the referee's notebook.

There are fifteen minutes to go at The Valley.

Big finish anyone? Charlton boss Lee Bowyer could do with one...

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Only one team in this at present as Preston look for a second to kill-off the game.

Charlton need to do something and there's some movement on the Addicks bench.

Chuks Aneke comes on for Darren Pratley.

Is he the man to make a difference?

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Ben Pearson, who has a reputation for liking a yellow card, has been cautioned.

Alex Neil will be disappointed with his combative midfielder as it's for dissent.

He will miss the game against Huddersfield now.

Not very clever from Pearson who has played well today.

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

Beram Kayal is booked for a rash challenge on Joe Rafferty.

The Preston defender took evasive action and it might have saved Kayal from a red as it wasn't pretty.

  18. Post update

    Charlton 0-1 Preston

    Gallagher pen

Preston have been putting on the pressure in the second half and are good value for the lead having been the better side since the break.

The penalty really came out of nothing as the cross came over, Pearce got too tight and ended up bringing down Stockley.

For those who haven't seen Paul Gallagher's penalty technique, it's worth a watch.

He stands with his back to the goalkeeper before running away and turning back to strike.

  19. GOAL: Charlton 0-1 Preston

    Paul Gallagher (pen)

    Gallagher pen

Paul Gallagher employs his trusty and unique penalty style to turn and slam the ball home.

No doubt about that one! Fired past Phillips who had no chance.

Preston are top of the table as it stands.

What have Charlton got as way of a response?

  20. PENALTY to Preston

    Charlton 0-0 Preston

Pearce brings down Stockley as a ball is fizzed in and it's a penalty to the visitors!
