  2. 'Top teams find it difficult to play against us'

    Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea

    Newcastle United

Steve Bruce speaking with BBC Match of the Day: “I can’t fault my players for the way we defended. The big thing we need to do better is look after the ball and cause more of a threat. Today we didn’t seem to carry a threat. But one great ball or delivery and you may call it smash and grab but it is good to see.

"We can’t press from the front like Chelsea do. If we did that we would come a cropper. So we have to do it our way, a way that suits the squad we have got.

"We can get better but we have had results against the top teams. They find it difficult to play against us and that’s what we try to do.

"You can’t fault our players effort and endeavour, so I was pleased for them to get the result the way we did."

  4. 'We dominated every aspect of the game'

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

    Chelsea

More from Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We dominated every aspect of the game. They hit the bar in the first half but the rest of the game was ours, except scoring.

"Newcastle defend their box, you won’t make too many clear-cut chances against them. We controlled the game, we were at the end of their box. At 0-0 I was going to say to the lads that they gave everything. But if we want to go to the next level we have to take chances and score in these kind of games.

"Even in the first half, there’s one team you feel that is pushing. We were trying everything, the lads have got their heads down in there. But the brutal reality of football is if you don’t score, teams stay in the game and something like that happens at the end.

"This is the reality of football. We have had more possession than any of our opponents in every game this season, it is a sign we have a lot of the ball but we are not scoring enough. And if we want to look upwards I know that we need to address that."

  5. 'We know where we need to strengthen'

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Frank Lampard speaking with Sky Sports: “We know we have problems at the top of the pitch in terms of we don’t get enough goals. If you don’t score you are always liable for a sucker punch and they got it.

“If we are looking for people to bring in to the areas to win games when you are controlling it, it is scoring goals.

“We can’t work anymore in training on finishing. You need to have that killer instinct in front of goal. We need to score more goals from front-line areas if we are going to get to where we want to be.

“It’s quite clear from what I am saying now that we know where we need to strengthen but we shall see.”

  6. Newcastle 'close to one or two' signings

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

    Newcastle United

More from the Newcastle manager Steve Bruce:

"We are close to one or two things, we’ll try and let’s hope we can get them over the line. We are not going to bring players in for the sake of it, they have to improve the group.

"We might have to at left-back because it looks serious with Jetro [Willems]. If looks as though he has twisted his knee badly.

"I’d love to give them a day off but we are in tomorrow. Always for a team in the bottom half, it’s always the accumulation of points over the year and let’s get to 40 points as soon as possible. I make no apology for that."

  7. 'Saint-Maximin produced the moment of quality'

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce speaking to Sky Sports: "The way we play and set up teams have possession against us.

"When we get better and try and improve our quality on the ball has to be better. We tried to change early on and I didn’t think we were ready. They have been used to playing this way for a couple of years and it helps when you get results.

"We set up to be difficult to play against, difficult to beat.

"Allan Saint-Maximin produced the ball of the match [for the goal]. That little bit of quality. It was a dreadful corner from Matt Ritchie and then he has the cheek to go on the telly.

"We keep working away and the resilience they show has got us a few results against some of the bigger teams. We have to take it slowly and build, the next step is to [improve that quality]."

  9. 'We played really well'

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

    Newcastle United

Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie: "To score late on is really nice. I thought we played really well and limited them to not too many chances

"We worked hard. We know they are a good side with lots of ability, we knew we have to stay compact, shuffle across the pitch and the longer it goes on, it opens up.

"Really pleased to be back involved. It’s a great group and we are doing really well this season."

  10. 'I wasn't supposed to go up for the corner'

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

    Newcastle United

Goalscorer Isaac Hayden speaking to Sky Sports: "I wasn't supposed to go up for the corner. I was supposed to stay back and be the last defender but I was on a yellow card so I couldn't foul anyone so I thought I might as well go up."

On being switched to wing-back: "I thought I was coming off (when Steve Bruce beckoned me over). I didn't have a clue what was happening but he said just do a job for the team and I'm pleased to have done that."

  11. Post update

    Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

This is Newcastle's first 90th-minute winner in a Premier League match since December 2015 against Tottenham, when Ayoze Perez struck.

The three points lift them up to 12th in the table, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

    Big win.

  12. Post update

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

    Steven Wild

Commentator for BBC Radio 5 Live

Oh my goodness. They've soaked up all the pressure in this second half. I was going to tell you they have soaked up all the pressure to hang on for a point - instead they have taken all three.

  13. FULL-TIME

    Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

    And that's it!

Newcastle have snatched a win that looked so, so unlikely for so, so long.

  14. GOAL - Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

    Isaac Hayden

    Yes they can!

The corner is poor and cleared by Willian but Allan Saint-Maximin picks it up and fires back into the box for Isaac Hayden to head in.

    Unbelievable scenes.

    Smash

    And

    Grab.

  15. Post update

Joelinton wins Newcastle a corner and there's a huge roar from the home fans.

    Could they...?
