  1. Post update

A disappointing start for England. Will we see a much-improved attacking force against Portugal? We'll be back Sunday (20:00 BST) to find out.

I'll leave you with Steve Sutcliffe's report on that disappointing defeat and see you later.

  2. 'You can't play safe if you are going to win'

England Under-21s boss Aidy Boothroyd, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we had a high percentage of the ball but we were not clinical enough. I don't think we created enough in the final third really and it is as simple as that. You expect a 0-0 in a game like that but [they scored] a freak goal. They are fine margins. We are not out of it yet, two more games and we can still get out of the group and that is what we will aim to do.

"The word cautious. We played a safe game today and if you are going to win you can't play safe. I felt at half-time we had more from us to come. The substitutes we brought on we had a go but unfortunately if was not our day today.

"We focus quickly on the next game and make sure we get a good result.

"This is the biggest test and we have to go through a bit of adversity to come through the other side. Am I worried about it? No I am not because the team that goes out against Portugal will be a very attacking team and we will see if we can improve.

"It is a very down dressing room but I've been in and told the players it is one game and we have to pick the learnings out of it and move onto the next game. We have still got a chance."

  3. Post update

No goals for the Under-21s today but England's senior side will surely come up with the goods against San Marino tonight? Their World Cup 2022 qualifying opener kicks off at 19:45 GMT and we'll have build up from around 18:30 GMT.

  4. 'It's important we stick together'

England Under-21 defender Ben Godfrey, speaking to Sky Sports: "It’s important we bounce back. We’ve got a couple of days to recover and prepare and we go again.

"I think everyone knows that football is not a straightforward journey. There are ups and downs. Today is one of the downs. It’s important we stick together and we’ve got the characters in there to do that.

“We trust him tactically [Aidy Boothroyd]. He’ll have a plan that we have to try and execute in the next game. It’s important for us to bounce back and show our character. If we go into it and give it our all why can’t we get the win and achieve what we want to achieve?

"The pitch can affect football games but it is the same for both teams. We’ve got to deal with those sort of things. We don’t use that as an excuse."

  5. Post update

Next up for England is Portugal on Sunday and then Croatia on Wednesday.

They are going to need to be significantly better to avoid going out at the group stage in five out of the last six tournaments.

John Dunthorne: Can not believe the lack of creativity, ability to cross, and lack of energy by England. Out of competition in a week. Too spoilt at home

Jord Gurr: England U21s' lack of spark is not surprising given the formation, play Eze and Cantwell from the start. McNeil is not good enough.

  7. Post update

    England U21s 0-1 Switzerland U21s

A really good performance by Switzerland, who did a job on England. They never made them feel comfortable playing out from the back and limited the Three Lions to very, very few chances.

    England U21s 0-1 Switzerland U21s

All over and it is defeat for England. Not ideal with a tough couple of games coming up.

  9. Post update

    England U21s 0-1 Switzerland U21s

Aaron Ramsdale smashes it long to Rhian Brewster - not pretty but anything goes at this stage of the game. Switzerland's defence is lapping it up, though.

  10. Post update

    England U21s 0-1 Switzerland U21s

The 90 minutes are up and England have four more minutes to try and rescue a point.

Craig Bailey: Who'd have thought playing 5 defenders, 2 in midfield, against anyone would result in a lack of creativity. Crazy with the likes of Cantwell on the bench!

Charles Palmer: Despite attacking talent, we’re not creating enough. 3-4-3 stifles creativity, for the senior side too. You need solid CM’s to help the defence and take the ball forward but where’s the link to the forwards? 1 less CD and 1 more AMC and we can out score most.

    England U21s 0-1 Switzerland U21s

Change for Switzerland as Bastien Toma is replaced by Kevin Ruegg just before Curtis Jones launches an effort well over.

  13. Post update

    England U21s 0-1 Switzerland U21s

You could say England were unfortunate to go behind given the somewhat freakish nature of the goal but this game looked for a long time like ending in either a stalemate or a Switzerland win.

There's just been a real lack of creativity from England. Surprising, given the superb attacking talent they have. Too cautious?

    England U21s 0-1 Switzerland U21s

Dan Ndoye has barely finished celebrating before he is replaced as the goalscorer makes way for Felix Mambimbi.

  15. GOAL - England U21s 0-1 Switzerland U21s

    Dan Ndoye

Switzerland snatch the lead late on!

There's a touch of fortune about the finish as Dan Ndoye kicks the ball onto his other foot as he slips when shooting and the ball loops over Aaron Ramsdale and into the back of the net, but Switzerland have looked the more threatening.

    England U21s 0-0 Switerland U21s

More changes for England as Dwight McNeil and Eddie Nketiah are replaced by Ryan Sessegnon and Rhian Brewster.

Will they provide the spark that England have been missing?

  17. CLOSE!

    England U21s 0-0 Switzerland U21s

Aaron Ramsdale does well to push away an awkward shot from distance by Andi Zaqiri as the Swiss threaten.

That was a good save as Ramsdale managed to push the ball away from lurking Switzerland players inside the box.

  18. Post update

    England U21s 0-0 Switzerland U21s

Eddie Nketiah tries an overhead kick from a free kick into the box but doesn't get a good connection and the ball flies wide. Right idea, though, it is going to take a moment of quality to settle this.

  19. Post update

    England U21s 0-0 Switzerland U21s

Alex Jankewitz whips a good ball into the box but Ben Godfrey rises highest to head away.

It isn't going to take much to settle this, whoever does manage to score will surely take the win.
