Chequered flag

And that's that. Hope that 70 second spurt onto the track was worth it.

As it is, Nico Rosberg finishes the day with the fastest time.

Some people are keen!

Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen and Daniil Kvyat all charge out on to the circuit...

Is that it? Force India thinks so. I'm inclined to agree.

A red flag brings all proceedings to an early end - 121 laps in total for @HulkHulkenberg, who closes in P8 with 1:25.336. #FeelTheForce

Out trundles the recovery truck. Six minutes until the end of testing for the day. Will there be enough time for any more laps?

Niche, Paul.

I like it though.

Red flag

Ten minutes from the chequered flag and the red flag is waving for the second time today. The reason? K-Mag's Renault has stopped at turn three.

Max Verstappen, who will finish the day having completed the most laps (he's currently on 143), improves a smidgen with 1:25.176. He stays seventh fastest though.

After a flurry of activity there's now just Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Daniil Kvyat circulating the track.

I said things were winding down,  it is quite the opposite as things start to get busy on the track for the final half hour - Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and several other drivers are out there.

Hamilton heads back out

Race run done, Lewis Hamilton is back out for the final 35 minutes. He's on the medium tyre and immediately goes sixth fastest with 1:25.051.

How about Kvyat's Cravats #bbcf1

How about Kvyat's Cravats #bbcf1

Anyone just joining us might be slightly confused by the image of Daniil Kvyat wearing a cravat but there is a valid reason for this.

I say valid, it is more there is a reason for this in that we have been discussing what career post F1 would be perfect for drivers past and present.

Gerhard Berger running a burger van and Valtteri Bottas operating a rival Valtteri's butties van have been my favourites so far.

There's a sense of things winding down now with just Valtteri Bottas and Daniil Kvyat on the track at the moment.

It looks like for the first time in testing a Mercedes will finish the day top of the timesheet.

Having finished the morning third fastest, Fernando Alonso had dropped down the timesheet a tad but, after slapping the soft tyres, he is back up to third with 1:24.735.

Valtteri Bottas is  on ULTRA (has to be in caps, makes it sounds like a computer fighting game combo) soft tyres, but hasn't improved on his 1:23.229 from earlier.

Kimi is back! After his time on the circuit was cut short earlier this afternoon when Ferrari was stuck in eighth gear, Kimi Raikkonen is finally back out on the circuit as we enter the final hour.

Rio Haryanto, Nico Hulkenberg and Max Verstappen are also out there.

Nico Rosberg had his say on Formula 1's new qualifying system at lunchtime and he clearly isn't happy with the way it has been dealt with.

A constant elimination style format has been agreed but won't be introduced until round five of the season.

"It's not very professional the image they are giving with that, going back and forth," says Rosberg.

"That's such a major change. It's good that we are thinking about it. It's important to bring them in as soon as possible."

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg effectively shared driving duties on a road trip fro London to Istanbul last week as Mercedes were putting in the miles in the first test and focusing on reliability.

It has been a change of pace for the pair today, with Rosberg doing some qualifying practice this morning, while Hamilton has spent this afternoon doing a race sim, which has come to an end as he pits after completing 71 laps this afternoon.

F1 journalist Dan Knutson in Barcelona: "Kimi Raikkonen has not been out on the track since his Ferrari had to be brought back on a flatbed truck. Apparently the gearbox is stuck in eighth gear."

Still no sign of Kimi Raikkonen after he brought out the red flag earlier this afternoon. Time is against the Finn, with one hour and 20 minutes of the session remaining.

McLaren confirm a telemetry glitch was the reason behind Fernando Alonso stopping just before lunch. The Spaniard is making up for lost time and up to 69 laps for the day.

Lewis Hamilton's first flyer of this stint sees him clocking his fastest time of the day so far - a 1:27.043 which moves him up to 11th.

Lewis Hamilton has just pitted for another set of mediums and has 20 laps to go in what would appear to be his race sim.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen is piling on the mileage - 110 laps and counting for the Toro Rosso driver.

Towards the end of last year, Pirelli talked about wanting to re-introduce a so-called “cliff” into the tyre’s behaviour - a sudden drop-off in performance after a certain amount of life. The idea being to try to promote more pit stops. But it doesn’t seem to have worked. Teams and drivers reported after the first test that this sudden cliff did not seem to exist.

Lewis Hamilton said earlier: "There’s not much of a cliff to be honest; they behave very similarly to last year. There is a little bit more deg maybe on the left-front tyre but generally it’s nothing exciting or nothing new that will make a difference." Hamilton went as far as to say he “preferred last year’s” tyre.

Renault’s Kevin Magnussen said he could feel the layer of harder rubber that has been inserted into the tyre to create the cliff - but that it did not have the desired effect: “There is a new hard layer on the inside of the tyre which is a bit strange and takes some getting used to. When you hit that, the balance changes a lot. I didn’t really feel a cliff. You just feel a massive difference in balance.”

Day done for Haas

No more running for Esteban Gutierrez as the team confirms "fuel system issues" have ended his day early.

Gutierrez had completed 23 laps this morning.

Fuel system issue ends the day early for @EstebanGtz. Back out on @Circuitcat_eng tomorrow.

F1 journalist Dan Knutson in Barcelona: "Here is something to watch out for during what we assume to be Lewis Hamilton’s race simulation. He did 10 laps on the soft Pirelli compound, switched to mediums, and then switched to a second set of (scrubbed) medium slicks with 36 laps to go.

"The drivers are allowed to use three different compounds during the races this year. We might see Hamilton duck into the pits near the end of his run for some super soft, or even ultra soft, tyres."
