It's from now that the real business starts. Can he turn it on when it counts tomorrow? Check out Andrew Benson's report of second practice here and join us from 06:30 BST tomorrow for qualifying day.

Lewis Hamilton was very definitely on it this afternoon on two different types of tyres. He has gone away, done a bit of thinking. When I asked him how he was going to get more performance from his car he said 'drive better'. That is what he is doing.

  6. Chequered flag

The chequered flag is waved and Lewis Hamilton finishes fastest in second practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix.

"I've got no power to get by," says Lewis Hamilton as he finds himself up behind another car.

That dummy penalty, by the way, was on point. No drama, and no chap with a dodgy stopwatch.

Into the final five minutes of practice, with Lewis Hamilton on course to finish top.

There's no mid-season testing in F1 so there are lots of little things and you have to do them in a Friday practice session. That's why we have just seen Mercedes simulate a penalty after the error they made in Baku.

Are they trying to simulate that perhaps? They had an issue the last time when they had to do that for real - the stopwatch broke if you remember? They've got a new system in place that doesn't involve someone standing holding a stopwatch.

"You've got a five second penalty, which we will serve on the pit stop," Nico Rosberg is told.

    Wait, what?

    Mercedes doing a dummy penalty?

Back to back pit stops for Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. The medium compound is bolted on Rosberg's Mercedes, while it is hards for Hamilton.

Or was this the reason for the slow lap...?

  18. Post update

It's long runs territory for almost everyone apart from Jenson Button, who is cracking on with a qualifying run right now. It's not a great lap as he ends up half a second down on his team-mate Fernando Alonso.

The reason he was a bit slower? He got held up by Kevin Magnussen, and he wasn't happy about it.

    "What a BEEEP!"

Anyone want to have a stab at what the 'BEEP' was concealing?

There's not much in it between the front runners long runs pace at the moment. Lewis Hamilton is average 1:40.8, while Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel are averaging 1:40.7.
