  2. Vettel on pole as Hamilton starts ninth - read the report

    Vettel

Sebastian Vettel will head an all-Ferrari front row at the Bahrain Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton will start ninth after a grid penalty.

Hamilton qualified fourth behind Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and his team-mate Valtteri Bottas but has a five-pace drop for an unauthorised gearbox change.

The star of qualifying was arguably Pierre Gasly in the Toro Rosso, who qualified sixth behind Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.

Gasly's performance was embarrassing for McLaren, who are down in 13th and 14th.

  3. Post update

Fair to say Ferrari are a bit happier with this weekend so far than Mercedes.

    Ferrari
  4. We didn't have the pace - Alonso

Fernando Alonso, who starts 13th and only just squeaked his way out of Q1, has posted a message on Instagram.

He writes: "We didn’t had the pace in qualy as in Australia, Q2 was the maximum, now let’s hope to repeat the result on Sunday like two weeks ago."

  5. 'Qualifying finished'

Nico Hulkenberg finished seventh at the end of the Australian Grand Prix a couple of weeks ago and that is where he will be at the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday.

Nick Allflatt‏: Quali round-up: 1. Vettel spoiled the greatness that would have been Kimi on pole 2. Gasly is a god. 3. Hamilton is actually human and makes mistakes. 4. Merc and Ferrari are very close on single lap pace.

Darren Sheppard: Huge efforts from Bottas and especially Gasly, starting 5th in a Honda powered car. Look away now McLaren.

Rachel T‏: Lewis Hamilton will be engaging rocket-ship mode tomorrow. Guaranteed.

Feli‏: Bottas didn't do a whole lot in the last run except knock Hamilton down another place on the grid... Pretty sure Toto will want a few words with him later?

  8. 'It spun quite aggressively'

Max Verstappen, who will start 15th after crashing at the end of Q1, tells Sky Sports. "It was a bit unfortunate. It spun quite aggressively, I didn't anticipate it. A little bit of luck with the safety car would be good tomorrow."

  9. Encouraging but frustrating

Daniel Ricciardo tells Sky Sports: "It was closer than expected so that is encouraging but still frustrating to be at the tail end."

"Top five within four tenths is pretty cool for F1. Yesterday our race pace did not look bad and I believe our car will be better than it was yesterday.

  13. Bottas third, Hamilton to start ninth
