  3. 'Not ideal obviously'

Sebastian Vettel starts in third and on the second row tomorrow: "It's not ideal obviously, we wanted to get pole and didn’t. It was a messy qualifying session and there was too much time missing so we didn't get any better than third.

"It's never ideal if you have a mini race in the out lap. There was a lot of other cars around but you can’t blame it on that. Both laps weren’t great. I think we have a good car so let’s see.”

  4. 'Feels like a victory

Max Verstappen will start second but remember in the third practice session earlier today he was moaning about "the product in the back of this car is not working like I want it to".

Now, after qualifying, he says: "Honestly this feels like a victory, the amount of problems we have had in qualifying with the engine to be second is unbelievable and that shows we have an amazing car.

"We just have to make sure we have a clean start then after that everything is possible. We need to sort out the engine but I'm very happy with the car."

  5. 'It was just perfect'

Lewis Hamilton, who is on pole, says: "Wow.. wow that was a hard qualifying session that lap felt like magic I don't know where it came from but it all came together.

"I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone at the factory, everyone is working so hard. And I was pushing so hard. Singapore is a beautiful track, my heart is racing and I'm really happy.

"It was really special, I don't think there was a bad moment in the lap, it was just perfect."

  6. Well played, Mercedes

Mercedes gambled on their strategy, going on the ultrasofts in Q1 with everyone else on the hypersofts. It nearly backfired in a spectacular way with Hamilton only 14th in Q1 but the strategy is spot on and Hamilton's driving was absolutely perfect.

He has a 30-point lead in the drivers' championship and in the best possible position to extend that lead further.

  7. 'Epic'

Hamilton's team radio: "You've done it mate! That was an epic first lap..."

  8. BreakingLewis Hamilton on pole position

    Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton

Sensational. Ferrari looked to have it in the bag. They were fastest in second practice, fastest in third practice, but are not even on the front row.

Lewis Hamilton again shows his absolute brilliance in qualifying to take the pole. Max Verstappen will be alongside him on the front row.

Sebastian Vettel is third, with Valtteri Bottas fourth. Kimi Raikkonen and Daniel Ricciardo take out the third row, with the Finn fifth.

  9. Post update

Max Verstappen second, Sebastian Vettel third. Which means...

  10. Post update

    Ricciardo to start sixth.

  11. Post update

Vettel has a fast first sector...

  12. Post update

    Raikkonen was fifth, still fifth.

  13. Post update

So here we go. Hamilton on pole? Or someone else?

  14. 'He was stuck'

    Jolyon Palmer

Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

I don't think it's sas from Vettel I think it's just needing find six tenths for that extra bit of performance, plus I think he was stuck in a bit of traffic.

    Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel
  15. Vettel sas?

Vettel radio: "Try next time to give me a good out lap and notice that Mercedes are a lot slower than us..."

  16. 'Amazing'

    Jennie Gow

BBC Radio 5 live pit-lane reporter

I think we should have unrepresentative running all the time, if we're going to do practice then lets make them irrelevant because it makes qualifying amazing.

  17. Post update

Time for the second runs. Can anyone boot Hamilton off of pole position? Max Verstappen is three tenths off, Vettel six tenths off, Bottas seven tenths off.
