  1. Thanks and goodbye

That's all for today. We're back at 10:30 BST on Saturday for third practice, hopefully you can join us.

Today was very much Ferrari's day. Same again tomorrow?

    See you then. Bye.

  2. Leclerc top as Ferrari dominate practice - read the report

    Andrew Benson

    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

    gasly

Charles Leclerc led a Ferrari one-two as Pierre Gasly’s difficult season continued with a big crash in second practice at the German Grand Prix.

Gasly lost control at the last corner and smashing into the barrier on the outside of the track, badly damaging his Red Bull. The Frenchman was unhurt.

Leclerc was 0.124 seconds quicker than Vettel and 0.146secs ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton on a blisteringly hot day.

Ferrari were first and second in both sessions and looked in good shape. But conditions are expected to be cooler over the weekend, and rain threatens.

Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas was 0.662secs off the pace in fourth, ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Marcus M: My favourite F1 livery was the 1997 Jordan car.

John Mullins: I thought this was a settled argument. 40 years on and Black Beauty herself, the Lotus 79 still beats off all comers.

Captain Vimes: JPS Lotus 72E. End of debate...

  4. Just a bump

"A bump with the wall" is the modest way Honda are describing Pierre Gasly smashing up his car.

  6. Team radio - Renault

    Hulkenberg: "No boost pressure."

Engineer: "Scenario 12 Nico, so box this lap."

Jolyon Palmer fills us in on a "scenario 12" situation:

"Scenario 12 is 'limp home mode' for the engine - so problems with the engine and they'll just get it back round to the pits.

"If it's a quick fix he can go back out, if not, Hulkenberg can just stay in the garage."

  7. Post update

We spoke to Charles Leclerc just before the British Grand Prix and he said beating team-mate Sebastian Vettel and being the quickest on the track is his target.

He's going to be achieving that in this session. Watch the clip here...

  8. Would Hamilton go to Ferrari?

    Andrew Benson

BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

Our commentary team have been discussing whether Valtteri Bottas would stay at Mercedes next year. Our chief F1 writer Andrew Benson is then asked if Lewis Hamilton would ever join Ferrari...

"I just don't pick up the same Ferrari love from Hamilton as you generally get from drivers.

"He seems so wedded to Mercedes. If you're looking at it in the cold light of day, why would he go to Ferrari when he's watched Ferrari mess things up, basically, for Alonso and Vettel for the past decade?"

Jack Hobbs: Best car livery hands down 1998 Arrows in my opinion. Late 90s the golden era for car paint jobs

Ian: best liveries pick from the following: JPS Lotus preferably on the Lotus 78 or the original Ferrari livery before it got sponsored out of purity. Ideally Lauda in 1975.

George Parker: Favorite livery of all time is the '97 McLaren Livery. There's something about the mid '90s chassis with that livery over any other Silver Arrows livery which is really nice.

  10. Post update

The session will restart at 15:21, so nine minutes of fun.

  11. Post update

That's the front left mangled for Pierre Gasly. The rear left is not looking too sharp either. He was down in 15th and the camera focuses on a very angry looking team boss Christian Horner.

Biggreenjelly: I’ve always loved the 1991 Jordan. Dark green and blue shouldn’t go so well together but it works and looked beautiful.

Tom Bateson: Brawn GP has the best all time, hands down!

Robert Green: Still the Williams FW14B (below) for me. Looks just right.

Loving these. Keep them coming in to us.

  16. Is Bottas' future in doubt?

    Jolyon Palmer

Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

I don't see Mercedes switching Bottas for Ocon - and I don't know why they would?

Sure, he hasn't won a race since Baku but he did take pole position at Silverstone at Hamilton's home race.

Is there another driver on the grid that can fight with Hamilton, toe-to-toe in the same machinery right now?

    Your favourite car liveries

We're seeing Mercedes donning a white front this weekend, a reference to their original racing colours when they started racing 125 years ago. Have to say, I really like it, but not everyone in the team agrees.

Right, we're heading to long run time so let's talk about car liveries.

Your favourite one of all time? Go.
