  10. Alpha Tauri on schedule

    Dan Knutson

    F1 journalist in Barcelona

Things are going very well for Alpha Tauri on this first day of testing.

That is the word from Alpha Tauri team principal Franz Tost who met with the media in the paddock earlier this afternoon.

“So far we are absolutely on schedule because on the morning of the first day we said we wanted to do as many aerodynamic measurements as possible,” Tost said. “We went out with different rigs and we tested different front and rear right heights – just to get a feeling about the aerodynamics of the car, and if everything correlates with the wind tunnel and the CFD.

“This is the normal process you do with a new car. Up to now they got a lot of data and hopefully they can use it in the best possible way, and from the speed we are there. As you can see the midfield is very, very close together. It is a matter of hundredths of a second, and we must work very hard to be in the front part of this midfield. The season will become very tough because all these teams are very close together. But that is good for F1, because F1 is entertainment, and people want to see this.”

    Were there any problems today?

“No, so far no problems and I hope it will stay like this,” Tost said. “As we see other teams don’t have problems either because nearly all the teams managed to do more 50 laps in the morning on the first test day. And that shows how high the level is an F1 on the reliability side.”

Dan: Isn't it great to see all 10 teams showing early says of reliability! Williams already outdoing the whole of their testing laps last year in one day this time around! McLaren 127 laps up, encouraging signs!

Cameron: Great stuff for McLaren today, completing more than 130 laps. Could this be a positive reading for tomorrow when Lando Norris gets to test for them? Well I certainly hope so.

Adam: I like how Ferrari are doing this first day, not setting huge times like the Mercedes, and just getting the runs done.

  15. There's only one hour to go!

  16. 'The car feels very good'

    Dan Knutson

    F1 journalist in Barcelona

Renault driver Esteban Ocon clocked the fifth fastest time and completed 62 laps in the morning session. He spoke to the media during the lunch break.

“So far, the testing went really well,” he said. “We completed our morning programme, without any issues, which was nice. The car feels very good to start with. It feels very well born. It is predictable. I think it is a solid base to start with.

“I tried to have the first feel (of the car). It is not true that I am not leaning on it yet. I am driving and trying to get the rust off of me. It has been some time since I properly drove a car, with somebody next to me and having references etc. I’m just trying to get back up to speed. It is important to have decent lap times to feel how the car reacts in a race or practice condition.”

  17. Most memorable hairstyles in F1

    #bbcf1

In honour of Antonio Giovinazzi's pony tail at testing today I thought this would be a great way of taking a trip down memory lane to reminisce about previous hairstyles.

We have already featured Jarno Trulli and his infamous high pony tail, but what about the wild and crazy long locks of Romain Grosjean that he debuted back in 2009 - do we approve?
