Now the stage is set for a final-day showdown between the Brave Blossoms and Scotland to see who will make it to the quarter-finals and tee up a potential meeting with either South Africa or New Zealand.

If you're still craving a World Cup fix then we've got you covered here...

  3. 'A lot of leaders in this side'

    FT: Japan 38-19 Samoa

Japan flanker Pieter Labuschagne, speaking to ITV: "It was hard work out there, it took us a long time. They're a quality side and showed it in the first half. Luckily in the last minute we got through for the bonus-point try.

"There are a lot of leaders in this side, it makes it a lot easier. It's taking it moment for moment and trying to make the best call at that time.

"This crowd is truly amazing, especially the last 10 minutes, they dragged us through - they've been absolutely wonderful."

  6. 'Samoa play a dangerous form of the game'

    FT: Japan 38-19 Samoa

    Iain Carter

    BBC Sport commentator

Samoa were let down by their discipline. They play a certain way, they fly into tackles and it could have been even more costly, as we know from the subsequent citings - they should have had two red cards against Russia, Fidow got a red card against Scotland in the next match, and Japan got their first try when Ioane was in the bin today.

They have to modify their game because it's a dangerous form of the game that they play - and as we know, that is something the game is trying to eradicate. That is at the heart of why they're on their way home already.

    FT: Japan 38-19 Samoa

What a game. Japan looked to be struggling under some serious Samoa pressure in the second half but they've pulled the bonus-point win out the bag and sit in pole position in Pool A.

  8. Full-time

    Japan 38-19 Samoa

    That's it.

Think we all need a lie down after that finish. Or a Sake.

  9. Converted try - Japan 38-19 Samoa

    Kotaro Matsushima

    They've done it!

Japan spin it left from the scrum this time into the hands of the clinical Kotaro Matsushima.

The winger shimmies to his left, throws half a dummy and then steps right through a gap in the Samoa defence to dive over and earn the hosts a huge, huge bonus point.

What a try for the hosts.

Yu Tamura nails the conversion - the Brave Blossoms are absolutely bubbling right now.

  10. Post update

    Japan 31-19 Samoa

Here goes the drive, huge power in that Japanese pack but the referee has blown for a penalty. What do the hosts do here? It'll be the same again, edging ever closer...

  11. Post update

    Japan 31-19 Samoa

Japan have it back! A free-kick for the feed at the scrum. Drama in the closing stages in Toyota. The Brave Blossoms get a put-in five metres out.

This place is about to burst.

  12. 'They'll look for really quick ball'

    Japan 31-19 Samoa

    Philippa Tuttiett

Former Wales international on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

I know it seems like you want to tap and go, but they're going for the scrum because you can suck in eight players. They'll look for a really quick ball out of the back and then it's a case of backs versus backs.

  13. Post update

    Japan 31-19 Samoa

Samoa opt for the scrum again. A few metres from their own line. Japan desperately want to turn this over and grab that extra point in Pool A.

  14. Post update

    Japan 31-19 Samoa

Well, Samoa have not read the script. Superb defence to turn the ball over and they get the put-in at the scrum. We've had the gong, this'll be the last dance.

  15. Post update

    Japan 31-19 Samoa

Five-metre line-out for Japan. Good throw, solid take and here goes the driving maul.

    Toyota is absolutely roaring.

There are 40,000-odd people in that maul helping it forward.

  16. Post update

    Japan 31-19 Samoa

Another blistering break from Japan and Samoa are penalised. The hosts won't be going for the posts here, they want another try and a bonus point. It could prove vital...

  17. 'What a response!'

    Japan 31-19 Samoa

    Philippa Tuttiett

Former Wales international on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

What a response! It's literally end to end. I love the composure that the Japanese backs had there. There's a lot of pressure on them, the forwards had battled really hard to give them good possession in a good position.

  18. Try - Japan 31-19 Samoa

    Kenki Fukuoka

    What a response!

It's powerful and direct from Japan as they look to burrow in on the left. Isileli Nakajima thunders towards the line and comes up short, but quick ball ensues and it's moved through hands to find Kenki Fukuoka on the overlap.

The substitute skips past a despairing Samoa tackle to touch down over the line.

    Wonderful score.

  19. 'Samoa remained composed'

    Japan 26-19 Samoa

    Philippa Tuttiett

Former Wales international on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

They fully utilised that opportunity. Japan decided not to compete in the line-out and defend but credit to Samoa, as soon as they got that ball down we saw the number five, Kane Leuapepe, peel away. He sucked in two or three players looking for an offload, they remained composed and played it out wide for the centres.

  20. Converted try - Japan 26-19 Samoa

    Henry Taefu

The pressure tells! A tense finale coming up...

Samoa make the line-out count this time as the ball is taking through the phases before being flung right for Henry Taefu, who spins his way over the whitewash.

The centre adds the conversion. One converted try in it.
