Jerzy Janowicz - the Polish serve machine who made the semi-finals in 2013 - has not really followed up that run to the last four since.

He has been eliminated in the third round or before in every one of the Grand Slams he has competed in since.

And he is not going to go any further this time. Turkey's Marsel Ilhan has ousted him 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 6-3. Twenty-six aces on the board in that one.

"It was great to see him come back from two sets down, and win and that will be a huge boost for him and make him a believer. Next up is David Goffin, who is a great ball striker, he hits a sweet ball. Liam should be most worried about just recovering he went five sets where as Goffin won easily."

A tournament official comes out to have a peer at the failing light. It is rather murky. He offers both players the veto - if either is unwilling to continue the match will be held over tomorrow.

It sounds like that Watson took that offer and so, to some grumbles from the court 12 crowd, they stride off.

Unseeded American Sloane Stephens, a quarter-finalist in 2013, has put 27th seed Barbora Strycova out with a 6-4 6-2 victory.

She will be a dangerous floating threat in draw. She could play Lucie Safarova in the third round.

Heather Watson is putting up a stiffer fight in the second set against Caroline Garica.

In fact, the British number one has just pilfered the Frenchwoman's serve for a 3-1 lead.

Reflecting on his five-set defeat to Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt said: "I was always going to leave it all out there on the court. I gave everything I had, and had nothing left in the tank at the end.

"There were a couple of times the match could have got away from me, but I hung there. I'd have loved to play Novak Djokovic in the next round, so it's disappointing."

After his 17th and final singles appearance at the All England Club, the Australian added: "The crowd was fantastic, and if I was going to go out for a final time, I wouldn't have had it any other way."

World number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic has been speaking to the BBC after his win against Philipp Kohlschreiber and was asked why he was so animated following the win.

"I knew the quality of my opposition. I really don't take anything for granted. I try to respect everybody it's a win and I try to celebrate it," he said.

"I think the fact that last time I played - at the Roland Garros final - I lost means I still feel traces of that. I needed to feel good after that."

The Serb also said he thinks the controversy surrounding allegations of on-court coaching between the world number one and his coach Boris Becker has been blown out of proportion.

"I think so, but who am I to judge that. There are people who know better and I will leave the speculation to them. I would like to close this here.

"There is nothing I am hiding.

"I think the next match there will be a secret agent sat next to Boris, but we are doing what the majority of other players and coaches are doing."

Grigor Dimitrov was the man who ended Andy Murray's title defence last year with an eerily comfortable straight-sets quarter-final win over the Scot in front of a bemused Centre Court.

The Bulgarian has not quite followed up that win. Some expected him to be a regular fixture at the sharp end of the biggest events.

Instead he has yet to reach a final this year and was comfortably seen off by Andy Murray when they met again at the Australian Open at the start of the year.

It hasn't sunk in - Broady

Earlier today Liam Broady beat Marinko Matosevic from two sets down and he's been speaking on BBC TV.

"I would have liked to go for a few more sets. The crowd played a massive part. When you have got a couple of thousand people behind you, it is hard to get tired.

"After the first match point I just I wanted to make myself proud. I knew this was a game I was never going to forget. I was just thinking, 'make him play, it's that simple'."

After Novak Djokovic's straight-sets win, next up on Centre Court is British number two Johanna Konta against Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova was last seen suffering in defeat to Lucie Safarova in the fourth round of Roland Garros and has since been in Los Angeles for a full health MOT.

In the meantime Konta has been racking up the best form of her life, beating top-20 ranked Ekaterina Makarova and Garbine Muguruza on her way to the last eight of Eastbourne.

Hostilities have just been opened up on Centre Court with Sharapova holding serve in the first game.
