Miles Maclagan

Former coach to Andy Murray on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"We always thought the doubles would be crucial. The one advantage Britain possibly have is that Andy Murray is fresh after his win but Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth will be so fired up and will come after them. But the way Andy and Jamie played against France in the quarter-finals, I'd make them favourites."

Ben Buxbaum: Unlucky Dan Evans, you tried your best but wasn't to be. Hoping the doubles is good tomorrow. Now time for the rugby!

Greg: Well played Dan Evans. I don't think Murray has much to worry about with Tomic.

Naveed Afzal: Even as a proud Brit, I love the passion and drive of Hewitt. He was a major reason Tomic stuck at it when struggling.

Everything to play for then as Britain look to make the Davis Cup final for the first time since 1978. Doubles is next up tomorrow with Andy Murray and Jamie Murray expected to be paired. Don't forget you can watch the action on BBC One from 13:00 and also follow on our live page online.

John Lloyd

Former British number one on BBC TV

"Somehow Tomic managed to sneak through. He needed that match, otherwise this tie would have been over. Dan Evans did a lot better than most people thought he was going to do."

Captain's view

Great Britain captain Leon Smith: "I feel for Dan, I think he repaid the faith that we had to select him. If it does come to the final rubber that's going to stand him in good stead now. I respect Kyle and James hugely, but I just thought Evo would have a great chance against Tomic on this court, and so it proved. Andy was outstanding earlier today."

David Law

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra commentator

"Dan Evans did all he could and wasn't far away. He pushed the Australia number one really hard and Tomic was teetering on the edge of the precipice."

Piers Newbery

BBC Sport in Glasgow

"He might not have won but Evans more than justified his selection and must have done some damage, both physical and mental, to Tomic over the course of three hours.

Any doubts around whether the Glasgow crowd would get behind the British number two as they did the British number one were unfounded, as they roared the man from Solihull back into the match. Tomic clung on though, and it's Men At Work rather than The Proclaimers hailing the victor."

How the match unfolded

Andrew Castle

BBC tennis commentator

"That was a tremendous contest, it really was. Dan Evans was a controversial pick but he gave it all."

Game, set and match

Evans 3-6 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 Tomic

A disappointing way to finish as Dan Evans sends the ball wide with a open court in front of him. A brave, brave effort from the number 300 though.

Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 4-5 Tomic *

A physically demanding rally and Tomic finds the energy to win the first point. Evans' turn to need a breather. Big serve is followed by a booming mid court volley to put Australia 30-0 up. Evans is wide and Tomic has three match points...

John Lloyd

Former British number one on BBC TV

"I'm surprised at Tomic's body language. He's walking around like he doesn't want to be here and he's about to keel over. That's an absolute bonus for Dan Evans."

Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 4-5 Tomic *

Tomic just wants to get over the finishing line as he looks exhausted. Evans holds his serve comfortably and Tomic needs to find some energy from somewhere to hold his nerve and win the match. This could be some game. We are at two hours 53 minutes already...

Evans rushes off for a toilet break. More time for Tomic to think...

John Lloyd

Former British number one on BBC TV

"Tomic does not look good. He's lucky he has that insurance of the double break. I think he'll conserve his energy for that second service game."

David Law

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra commentator

"Both players are exhausted but Tomic is like an old man with a walking stick. He's trudging around the baseline as if he can barely put two steps together."

Evans breaks

*Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 3-5 Tomic

Bernard Tomic has looked on his last legs for most of this fourth set but, somehow, he is serving for the match. Evans just won't go away quietly as a passing forehand makes it 15-15. Now 30-30 as a tired Tomic nets and then an unbelievable rally is won by the Brit to set up break point. He makes it with a backhand and on we go. Scenes. Tomic is crouched down at the back of the court.

Andrew Castle

BBC tennis commentator

"He's an enigma, Dan Evans. He's an engaging personality. He's been nowhere for the last year and a half. But I love his game when he plays like this."

John Lloyd

Former British number one on BBC TV

"If Evans had a consistent work ethic, he would walk into the top 100."

Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 2-5 Tomic *

Evans is entering the last-chance saloon. Where have we said that before? A serve and volley takes him to game point at 40-30 but a similar tactic doesn't prove as successful as he nets a volley to take the game to a deuce.

Evans keeps coming forward but is just wide with a backhand as we go back to deuce. Break point Australia after Evans nets and but it is saved with a delicious angled slice backhand. Another break point for Tomic though and this time he takes it. Two breaks down and surely match Australia?

David Law

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra commentator

"Whatever happens now, Dan Evans has done himself proud and justified his selection."

Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 2-4 Tomic *

Tomic
PA

Unbelievable stuff from Dan Evans as, on the reach, he fires the ball past Bernard Tomic. Three aces from the Australian, followed by a double fault and we are at deuce again. Break point Britain as Evans' backhand is knocked long by Tomic but saved. Australian Lleyton Hewitt is prowling on the side and punching the air as Tomic holds again. He is holding on - just.

Jamie Baker

Former British Davis Cup player on BBC Two

"The frustrating thing for Evans is that he's allowed himself to fall behind despite being the better player in this set. And when you're up a break like Tomic is, you can go for those big shots because you're a bit more relaxed."

John Lloyd

Former British number one on BBC TV

"You can see, when Tomic explodes, he has got so much power in his groundstrokes. But he is so conservative at times."

Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 2-3 Tomic *

Dan Evans and coach Leon Smith are having a lengthy chat with the umpire. Not too sure what that is about. Tomic is the one who looks like he is struggling at the moment - but he does have the break.

Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 2-3 Tomic *

Captain Leon Smith
PA

A 17th ace of the match is the perfect start for Evans and he follows that up with a sublime backhand drop shot. Ace number 18 follows, on his second serve. A couple of nerves as Tomic gets it back to 40-30 and then a big forehand makes it deuce.

Brave from Evans though as he follows up a first serve with a winning midcourt forehand, cancelled out by another rasping forehand from the Australian. Sloppy error from Tomic as he goes long and an awful attempted drop shot hits the net and gives Evans the game.

*Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 1-3 Tomic

Evans at 0-30 again on Tomic's serve. Can he break back this time? Bernard Tomic's backhand makes it 30-15 but he nets the next point and two break points for Evans. What a shot from Tomic to save one as his forehand passes Evans, who fails to put enough on a volley. Two big serves move Tomic to advantage and and an easy volley gives him the game. Great character from the Australian.

Andrew Castle

BBC tennis commentator

"Tomic has got to be thinking that Evans is going to get inspired again at some point, because he's been doing it all match."

Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 1-2 Tomic*

The physio is on again. Dan Evans's turn to get some treatment again now. What shape is he going to be in for Sunday?

Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 1-2 Tomic*

Evans may be a break down but he is still very much in this match as he holds to love.

* Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 0-2 Tomic

Wait a minute though. Unerring accuracy from Evans as he rifles a forehand down the line to go 0-30. He has a chance to put a volley away at the net, hits it at Tomic, and the Australian passes. Two break point now as Evans stretches to send one down the line. A big forehand from Tomic takes it deuce and he serves out the game with two massive serves.

Jamie Baker

Former British Davis Cup player on BBC Two

"Dan Evans is absolutely furious with himself. All the momentum was with him. But how much has that third set taken out of him?"

Tomic breaks

Evans 3-6 6-7 7-6 (7-4) 0-1 Tomic*

Just what Evans didn't want as he pushes a backhand wide and Tomic has two break points. An ace saves one before a brilliant point takes it to deuce as he follows up a half volley lob with an angled volley. The Australian reacts with a brilliant winner of his own to set up another break point and he makes this one as Evans goes just long. A terrible start to the set for Britain...

"I cannot believe how tight Tomic got there. I think he's getting a little bit psyched out here, he's getting nervous."
