Stan Wawrinka: I think I showed unbelievable fight tonight. Saving match point was tough. He's really talented, was pushing me a lot and there was a lot of pressure to stay in the match.

"I tried to dictate play a bit more at the end but I am really happy to finish like that. I had to stay positive and find some mental fight to stay in the battle."

That was beyond what anybody could have expected from Dan Evans He went toe to toe with one of the best players in the world and came within one point of beating him.

    Dan Evans
  3. Game, set and match

    Evans 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (8-10) 2-6 Wawrinka

Dan Evans was a whirlwind, a Tasmanian Devil on Louis Armstrong, but it has not quite proved enough against world number three Stan Wawrinka.

A whole new horizon is surely opening up for the 26-year-old who has reached the third round in his last two Grand Slam events.

    Simon Briggs

Daily Telegraph tennis correspondent on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

This match will be a frustration for Dan Evans but I don't see it knocking him back. It should be a learning experience for him.

  5. Wawrinka breaks

    Evans 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (8-10) 2-5 *Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka suddenly hits a purple patch, jagging angles, precise volleys and Dan Evans very nearly run out of town.

The Swiss serves for the match next.

  6. Evans breaks

    *Evans 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (8-10) 2-4 Wawrinka

Dan Evans might yet be thanking that physio by the end of this match.

Their disagreement has relit the fire in his belly. Evans hits a superb running forehand in the opening point of the game and motions to the medical man to ask if a cramping man could do such a thing.

He breaks back to 15 and is just one break of serve down in this decider.

    Surely not?

  7. Post update

    Evans 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (8-10) 1-4 *Wawrinka

Dan Evans battles through to get on the board in the fifth set.

There are a few wheels dropping off his wagon though. At the changeover, he launches into a tirade at a physio who diagnoses him with cramp - and therefore ineligible for a medical time-out - rather than the twisted ankle the player himself believes he has incurred.

    Russell Fuller

BBC tennis correspondent in New York

There's a rather resigned look from Evans now. It's getting away from him.

  9. Post update

    *Evans 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (8-10) 0-4 Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka rolls through a service game to love.

    The Swiss supremacy re-established?

It is going to take some effort to de-rail him now...

  10. Wawrinka breaks

    Evans 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (8-10) 0-3 *Wawrinka

Dan Evans seems to be running on fumes.

Love-forty and the Briton can only claw back one of the three break points before an ugly double-fault punches a potentially terminal hole in his challenge.

    Simon Briggs

Evans looks absolutely disconsolate as if he can feel this slipping away from him. It looks like he hasn't got enough left in the tank.

  12. Post update

    *Evans 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (8-10) 0-2 Wawrinka

    Dan Evans comes out swinging.

The British number two racks up 0-30 and is one a whisker away with a backhand poke up the line.

Hammer and tongs, dodge and dive, chase and scurry.

A couple of sublime rallies of stratosphere-scraping quality end with Wawrinka making his escape.

Iain Pringle: I'm in a US Sports bar with 16 screens and all they're showing is "football". I'm the loner staring at the my phone!! C'mon Dan!!

Ladybroxbourne: C'mon Dan Evans you deserve this, played your socks off

  15. Wawrinka breaks

    Evans 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (8-10) 0-1 *Wawrinka

Dan Evan fluffs some of the fine needlework at the front court, netting a volley to allow Wawrinka an early advantage in the fifth and final set.

Kyle: Gutted for Dan to lose that epic tie break. Get the feeling momentum is with Stan but don't write off Evans just yet.

Lorna Bailey: Regroup, refocus, reenergise - COME ON DAN!!!

Tim Addicott: I'd like to go to bed but this is too compelling ....fifth set here we go

  17. Evans saves two break points, deuce

    *Evans 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (8-10) 0-0 Wawrinka

If there is a vacancy on Tracey Island, Dan Evans would be the man to fill the post.

He salvages deuce from 15-40 down as Stan Wawrinka attempts to back up the fourth set with and early break.

  18. Post update

    Dominic Inglot

Great Britain Davis Cup player on Radio 5 live sports extra

There were missed opportunities but they were half chances for Dan.

You have to be fair and say Stan did very well there but Evans has figured out how to get Wawrinka on the back foot and he's got to keep doing that, keep believing, be clinical, and stay disciplined.

Dan has to make sure he doesn't come out in a lull at the start of this set. He's got to be bouncing around like a kangaroo and believe he can still do this.

Christian Evans: The pros of working nights, following the tennis religiously! Come on Dan!

  20. Game and fourth set

    Evans 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (8-10) Wawrinka

    Evans plants wide.

    Stan points to his temple.

Is that where the tide and the temperament turns?

    We are into a fifth....
