Inexperience costs Thiem

Tim Henman

Former British number one on BBC Two

The first set was really good quality tennis from Thiem but he lost that intensity in the second set and he will be disappointed. There was a little bit of inexperience of playing at this level.

Serbia's Novak Djokovic: "Dominic started very well and we played on a very high level from the first point. He had a very high serve percentage and was the tougher player in the key moments of the tie-break. I definitely did not want to let him get off to a good start in the second set.

The players feel like rock stars at the O2. Thank you for everyone for being here in such large numbers from the very first match."

Austria's Dominic Thiem: "It was a good match with a great first set. I lost a little bit of energy which is what you need to play against Novak but it was an unbelievable;e experience to play on this great stage in front of this great crowd.

"I think the court is playing quite fast compared to the rest of the year.

"This is one of the best events in men's tennis and I will play at least three matches. I am a little tired and empty but can't wait to play in the next match."

Djokovic was comfortable in the end and there were lots of signs that he's playing good tennis. His movement was good.

Novak Djokovic uppercuts the air in delight as he clinches victory. He turned Dominic Thiem into a punchbag for those final two sets.

Gael Monfils and Milos Raonic are the other two players in these two's group. Djokovic has never been beaten by either.

Another huge roar from Djokovic. He's turned this match round impressively. He raced through his own service games in a close opening set but since he lost it he has won 11 games to two.

Novak Djokovic takes the short-cut towards victory as he breaks Dominic Thiem for a second time, rolling a forehand across court.

The Serb has got seriously hot after losing the first set on a tie-break. He bellows down the opposite end with eyes on stalks after landing the final blow of the game.

Novak Djokovic is notching up the service games as casually as Andy Dufresne counting down his prison sentence.

Another copper-bottom hold as he keeps Thiem at arm's length and reels victory ever closer.

Dominic Thiem was a'wibbling and a'wobbling at 30-30, but a roundhouse forehand down the line means Djokovic is not ordering his taxi home just yet.

Novak Djokovic is zeroing in on victory like a heat-seeker.

Dominic Thiem pushed hard for an immediate response, but was rebuffed by a typically stubborn Djokovic.

That "they shall not pass" mentality is suddenly in full effect once more.

Jujitsu tennis.

Novak Djokovic is soaking up the punishment from Dominic Thiem and then turning it against the Austrian.

The Serb snaps Thiem's serve to thirty. He has not been broken yet in this match and is four holds from victory.

Dominic Thiem scurries and chases to stay in contact with Novak Djokovic, before clouting a fine crosscourt return winner to bring up 40-30.

Can he take it to deuce?

Not quite. Novak Djokovic plops down a precise forehand into the open court to seal the game, but Thiem looked a lot more competitive there.

Dominic Thiem lets out an Arnie-style grunt as he slices a backhand into the net to allow Novak Djokovic back to 15-15.

He takes his aggression out on the back of the ball though, knocking Novak Djokovic out of his rhythm with some zippy forehands.

Iced? Jam? Ring?

How do you like you doughnuts Dominic?

The Austrian had better be keeping his powder dry for a decider because his game has gone AWOL in this second set.

Thiem favourite for the decider?

Thiem has won 21 out of 23 matches that have gone to a final set this year. That's the best record on tour.
