  1. Bye for today

    Roger Federer

But on another day of persistent rain, we have been treated on Arthur Ashe.

After hometown heroine Coco Vandeweghe unseated the world number one Karolina Pliskova in the women's semi-final, Rafael Nadal laid on a masterclass for Andrey Rublev, winning in three.

Madison Keys rounded out the all-American line-up for the women's semi-finals with victory over Kaia Kanepi before that headlining main event where Juan Martin del Potro did for five-time champion Roger Federer.

    Catch you tomorrow.

  2. Tomorrow

    Tomorrow is women's semi-final day.

Expect a whole lot of red, white and blue in the stands with it being an all-American lock-in in the final four.

Venus Williams plays Sloane Stephens in the first match at midnight BST before Coco Vandeweghe and Madison Keys take up the theme.

  3. The reign of Spain

    Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 4-6 Del Potro

Juan Martin del Potro's victory means that Spain are assured a notable double of occupying the top ranking slots in the men's game (Rafael Nadal) and the women's (Garbine Muguruza).

It is the first time that one nation has done that double since Americans Andre Agassi and Serena Williams sat at the top of their respective trees back in 2003.

Marca's front page is reveling in the success.

  4. Ginobili joins party

    Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 4-6 Del Potro

A lot of love for Juan Martin del Potro from his fellow Argentine Manu Ginobili of NBA fame.

  5. 'Delpo was better today'

    Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 4-6 Del Potro

Roger Federer is not hanging around, rushing through his post-defeat press conference.

The Press Association's Eleanor Crooks reports that he is being as magnanimous as ever.

  6. Del Potro beats Federer

    Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 4-6 Del Potro

The Flushing Meadows DJ throws on a bit of Dancing in the Dark.

Now doubt who was the Boss under the lights tonight.

Juan Martin del Potro is into his fourth Grand Slam semi-final after the 2009 French Open (lost to Federer), 2009 US Open (beat Nadal & then Federer in final) and 2013 Wimbledon (lost to Djokovic).

  7. 'This is my home court too' - Del Potro

"I think I played my best match of the tournament. I played everything well. My serve was good, I hit my forehands as hard as I possibly could.

"This is my home court too. The fans make me feel happy every time I play here. I hope against Rafa the crowd will be cheering for me again.

"I don't know what the turning point was, maybe I got lucky. I can't believe I am back after all my injuries and surgeries."

  8. Del Potro beats Federer

    Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 4-6 Del Potro

There was not a wobble or quiver down the home straight from Juan Martin del Potro.

He won 20 of 23 points on his own serve in the fourth set.

  9. No Federer v Nadal at US Open...again

    Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 4-6 Del Potro

  10. Post update

    Jeff Tarango

Former professional tennis player on 5 live sports extra at Flushing Meadows

Unbelievable result, unbelievable tennis. There is something about this court that brings out the best in Del Potro.

  11. Game, set and match Del Potro

    Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 4-6 Del Potro

Juan Martin del Potro, inevitably, finishes with a forehand, piercing the Federer defence with another stinging slap off that side to seal the deal.

His arms shoot north in celebration and Roger Federer, grim-faced, trudges to the net to offer his congratulations.

  12. Match point Del Potro

    Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 4-5 *Del Potro

An easy volley for Federer. For anyone...

    But no!

The living legend bashes it clumsily wide.

And Del Potro is a point away...

  13. Thirty-all

    Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 4-5 *Del Potro

Juan Martin del Potro over-cooks on his forehand and the red shirts in the stands stand and holler.

Is this a lifeline for their man?

    Thirty-all.

  14. Post update

    Jeff Tarango

Former professional tennis player on 5 live sports extra at Flushing Meadows

Del Potro is like a shark in the water cornering prey when he goes with that forehand, there is nothing that can stop it.

  15. 30-15

    Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 4-5 *Del Potro

Juan Martin del Potro pings that fierce forehand into a sliver of open court for 15-0.

    A rocket ace for 30-0.

But Federer gets on the board as he hits hard at his man at the net and the Del Potro volley heads south into the net. 30-15.

  16. Post update

    Jeff Tarango

Former professional tennis player on 5 live sports extra at Flushing Meadows

Del Potro has no pain threshold, he pushes himself as far as he can go. He keeps upping the ante.

  17. Federer holds

    *Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 4-5 Del Potro

Roger Federer keeps his cards on the table as he flicks a dead-eyed backhand down the line and claws his way out of the mire.

But next up is a Juan Martin del Potro service game and that man's opening shot has the concussive power to turn off the lights for good.

  18. Del Potro moves 0-30 up

    *Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 3-5 Del Potro

Juan Martin del Potro sends a forehand streaking away across court, singeing Roger Federer's eyebrows en route and is 0-30 up.

Two points away from the semi-finals.

  20. Del Potro holds

    *Federer 5-7 6-3 5-7 (8-10) 3-5 Del Potro

    Federer's mum and Mirka

Roger's mum and Mirka are worried, and with good reason. Their man is bang centre of the crosshairs.

Juan Martin del Potro's quicksilver serve jams up Roger for 15-0.

A 130 mph brute of an ace makes it 30-0.

Federer drifts a chipped return long for 40-0.

And a service winner down the winner seals the deal.

    Bish, bash, bosh. And goodnight?
