'An extraordinary sporting story'

David Law

Radio 5 live commentator at Melbourne Park

The fact Roger Federer has turned it around, after Novak Djokovic's period of dominance, and at 36 has won three Grand Slams in last 12 months is one of the most extraordinary sporting stories I have ever heard about.

I don't think even he expected this. It means so much more as a result

Tears of a champion

Federer ends with: "To all the fans. You fill the stadiums, you make me nervous, you make me go out and practice. I just want to thank you for everything.

"To my team, I love you guys."

Cue tears. Loads of tears. The 20-time Grand Slam winner's gone.

Stop it, Rog. You'll set us all off.

Pat Cash

Former Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 live

A few years ago you thought he was over the hill. But he redesigned his game, he's fit again and he's come back a better player. He's changed his racquet and his backhand.

I don't know if he'll play the French Open but I don't see anyone touching him at Wimbledon.

On a fast court, Federer is my favourite every time.

Pat Cash

Former Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 live

It was a good performance from both players. You've got to hand it to Cilic, he had to play the best tennis and keep it up. That was the problem.

Federer was consistent the whole way though. Other than a few double faults and a few patches, it was good consistency.

Roger Federer drops into his seat, puts his arms in the air and embraces the rapturous applause from the Rod Laver Arena.

What an effort from the 36-year-old. Three hours and two minutes, but he has his sixth Australian Open title.

Federer has previously won 19 of these, but he has a look of a man who's never done it before.

He may be 36, but he shows no sign of ageing.

He's proved yet again he's too good for the rest of the world.
