    As has been pointed out by our BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller, Halep emulates Chris Evert with this win.

    Evert also lost her first three Grand Slam finals before making the breakthrough at Roland Garros in 1974.

    Not bad company to be in.

    So after three consecutive defeats in finals, Simona Halep is just the second Romanian woman to win a Grand Slam, following Virginia Ruzici in 1978.

    She is the 49th woman to win a Grand Slam title in the Open era.

    Simona Halep: "Last year was very emotional so I was living for this moment since I was 14 so thank you and I wanted this moment to happen here in France. Congrats to Sloane, you have done a great job since the injuries and I'm sure you are going to play lots more finals.

    "I see the Romanian flag in the crowd, thanks to my friends and my family and to all the Romanian and French fans, I have felt your support over the last two weeks. I wish in the future to play more finals here, because it's a really beautiful tournament and it is my favourite one."

    Runner-up Sloane Stephens: "To Simona congrats on your first slam, no-one else I'd rather lose to than the number one in the world.

    "To my team, thank you for your support and without you I wouldn't be able to have such a smile on my face with a loss.

    "I look forward to seeing you next year."

    She raises it high above her head and the crowd cheer again.

    You can't help but feel happy for her. There may now be a tear or two in her eye as the Romanian national anthem plays.

    She more than played her part in one of the matches of the season today.

    Simona Halep on ITV: "It was amazing and thank you for your support. In the last game I didn't feel like I could breathe any more and didn't want to repeat last year, so I cannot believe it. I was dreaming of this moment since I started playing tennis and I'm happy it happened at Roland Garros."

    She was in tears after losing in the final last year. The Romanian's face couldn't look any more different this time around.
