  1. Konta denied break

    *Konta 4-6 0-0 Putintseva

Konta makes the best possible start to the first game of the second set by bringing up a break point.

Putintseva staves off the danger with her first ace of the match.

    We go to deuce.

  2. Post update

    Konta 4-6 Putintseva*

The Roland Garros stats page makes that 22 unforced errors for Konta compared to 10 from her opponent in the first set.

That just won't do for the British number one.

    Johanna Konta
  3. Game and first set

    Konta 4-6 Putintseva*

    Ouch.

Jo Konta goes big with a forehand and wallops straight into the net.

Yulia Putintseva takes the first set.

    Yulia Putintseva
  4. Three set points to Putintseva

    Konta 4-5 Putintseva*

Out of nowhere, Yulia Putintseva brings up a 0-40 and three set points!

Johanna Konta saves one with a good backhand winner.

Then Putintseva slaps the net. Two saved...

  5. Upset alert

    Venus Williams is OUT.

The 2002 finalist becomes the first big casualty of the French Open.

She's been beaten by Qiang Wang of China, the world number 91, in straight sets - 6-4 7-5.

    *Konta 4-5 Putintseva

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

A touch sparse inside Court One, which is a bit like a mini-bullring - circular, brick, flags on the top of the outer ring, red dirt in the middle.

Not surprisingly that it is quiet seeing as most of the home fans are watching France's leading male hope Lucas Pouille over on Chatrier.

I've heard one 'Allez Jo' though, as well as a few British voices, to give encouragement since Konta lost her serve.

  7. Konta breaks

    *Konta 4-5 Putintseva

A big scream of delight from Konta. She's broken back to keep herself in the set.

  8. Break point Konta

    *Konta 3-5 Putintseva

Yulia Putintseva has Jo Konta scurrying all over the court like a terrier as she takes a 30-15.

On the next point, Konta shows she won't be given the run around any more when she pummels a forehand deep into the clay.

And then Putintseva clips a forehand over the baseline to give the Briton her first break opportunity.

  9. Putintseva breaks

    Konta 3-5 Putintseva*

    Yulia Putintseva

Putintseva brings up another break point.

A rally ensues and Konta comes bounding into the net. She sticks a volley wide.

The British number one's been broken and Yulia Putintseva will serve for the set.

  10. Post update

    Konta 3-4 Putintseva*

Konta escapes the danger again to bring up deuce.

She takes the advantage...but another loose ball over the baseline takes us back level again. We continue...

  11. Putintseva earns two break points

    Konta 3-4 Putintseva*

Konta looks a little nervous now. She's back on serve.

    Very quickly she's 0-30 down.

Putintseva lets fly over the baseline to make it 15-30 but then Konta does the same and the world number 93 has another two break points.

  12. Post update

    *Konta 3-4 Putintseva

Eeesh, Konta clocks up her 14th unforced error as Putintseva moves 30-0 to the good.

The British number one swings long on the next point and Putintseva pulls out a sort-of overhead smash straight down the clay to hold.

    Johanna Konta
  13. Konta holds

    Konta 3-3 Putintseva*

I've not watched Yulia Putintseva play before but I'm enjoying how animated she is.

The Kazakh gesticulates wildly with her hands and equipment as she throws away the chance to break.

Konta's out of jail for now.

  14. Konta saves break point

    Konta 2-3 Putintseva*

    Johanna Konta

Yulia Putintseva brings up the first break point of the opening set.

Konta's first serve is a dud, the second is slow but Putintseva smashes her return long.

    Back to deuce.

  15. Post update

    Konta 2-3 Putintseva*

A backhand down the line gets Konta off to a good start on serve.

She comes out on top of a decent rally by darting into the net and volleying down.

But after two great points the Briton double faults and then goes long. It's 30-30.

Putintseva overcooks a forehand and slams her racquet in frustration, but soon she takes us to deuce...

    Konta 2-3 Putintseva

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

When we will see Hawkeye introduced at Roland Garros? It's a debate that continues to rage.

Yulia Putintseva's puzzled expression tells you she probably thinks it should be brought in, instead of the umpire scurrying down to point out the mark where the ball landed.

They argue the toss for a minute or two over that final point in the fourth game, the Kazakh pointing her racket at one mark, the umpire another. Only one winner there...

  17. 'Jo is starting to turn a corner'

    *Konta 2-3 Putintseva

Tennis coach, tennis mum and all-round top tennis lady Judy Murray was on Sportsweek on BBC Radio 5 live earlier today.

She discussed Johanna Konta's mixed form in recent months.

"It’s one thing getting to the top of the game – it’s quite something, in term of mindsets, staying there," said Murray.

"You go from being the hunter to being the hunted and it’s a completely different mindset.

"The pressure is much more on you once you get up there, to stay there. But in the last few weeks Jo has been showing signs of getting back to her best form.

"She hasn’t really been with her new coach Michael Joyce all that long and it does take a little bit of time to get a new relationship like that to work.

"Not just on the court but off the court she’s spending so much time with him so you need to give that time to bed in. I do think in the last few weeks she’s been starting to turn a corner."

  18. Post update

    *Konta 2-3 Putintseva

    Johanna Konta

Jo Konta is really fired up now. She seems to have cut out the early errors and looks confident.

A powerful forehand return flies across the clay and beats Putintseva for 30-30.

Unfortunately for the British number one, she hits the net on her next two points and the world number 93 holds again.

  19. Post update

    Konta 2-2 Putintseva*

Boom! Ace. Lovely job, Jo Konta.

And another one to take the game.

Hang on, the umpire is out of his chair to check the line. There's no fancy VAR-style line calls in Paris. They stick to the rudimentary naked eye.

Konta's second ace is ruled in by the German umpire so she levels the set.

  20. Post update

    *Konta 1-2 Putintseva

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

    Johanna Konta

Talking of keeping cool, that's what Jo Konta has been trying to do as she bids for a first win in the Roland Garros main draw.

She says she has been playing better on the red dirt than results suggest, also pointing to her previous successes in French Open qualifying.

Want another positive? She's beaten Putintseva twice - both on clay.
