Cecchinato beats Djokovic to reach semi-final

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

Novak Djokovic is out of the French Open after Italy's Marco Cecchinato beat him to reach the semi-finals in a huge shock in Paris.

Djokovic, 31, saved three match points and missed three set points before the world number 72 finally won 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 1-6 7-6 (13-11).

Cecchinato, 25, had never won a main-draw match at a Grand Slam before this year's Roland Garros. He will face Austria's Dominic Thiem in the last four.

Their meeting on Friday means there is guaranteed to be at least one first-time Slam finalist.

Seventh seed Thiem reached his third Roland Garros semi-final with a straight-set win against Germany's second seed Alexander Zverev, who also struggled with injury.

Cecchinato, who was banned for match-fixing in 2016 before having the suspension overturned, is the first Italian to reach a Grand Slam semi-final since 1978.

Cecchinato beats Djokovic to reach semi-final

Ian Gibson: Gutted that Novak lost. I think we are sadly past peak Novak and his chances of a future slam win looks difficult. He showed great fight today as ever and I hope Wimbledon sees him fully fit and competitive for that title.

MancSW: Djokovic is always so classy and gracious in defeat. Cecchinato absolutely sensational performance, best match of the tournament so far for me. Superb tennis all round.

Skillzie: Fair play to Djokovic, still getting stronger after injury - reaching the Quater-Finals is a surely a success for a man out for so long. Great match from Cecchinato - Keep the run going!

  5. Djokovic doubts

Cecchinato beats Djokovic to reach semi-final

    Russell Fuller

    BBC tennis correspondent in Paris

Novak Djokovic didn’t say much in a press conference conducted in a small interview room (without an official microphone) immediately after coming off court - but he did say he’s not sure whether he will play on the grass.

Mehul Varu: What a match! Tennis at its next level You won the match as well as heart #cecchinato and what a fight by Djokovic.

Rose Richards: Djokovic won 144 points to Cecchinato 140 the difference 54 to 38 winners. Same number of errors. I thought Djokovic was going to come back and win in five. Good win.

Eddie Wong‏: Marco, Novak. The world just stopped breifly with one of the most incredible sporting spectacles you are likely to see all year. Bravo!

  7. Djokovic to miss Wimbledon?

Cecchinato beats Djokovic to reach semi-final

A quote from beaten quarter-finalist Novak Djokovic, and there could be disappointment for those hoping to see him at Wimbledon next month.

Djokovic says he "doesn't know if he's going to play on grass".

  8. Rare unseeded semi-finalist

Cecchinato beats Djokovic to reach semi-final

Another stat for you. Marco Cecchinato has just become the first unseeded player to reach the French Open semi-finals since Gael Monfils did back in 2008, before he lost in four sets against Roger Federer, who then in turn lost to Rafael Nadal in the final.

  9. First Italian man into a Grand Slam semi for 40 years

Cecchinato beats Djokovic to reach semi-final

Marco Cecchinato has become the first Italian man to reach the semi-finals at a Grand Slam since Corrado Barazzutti in Paris in 1978.

Cecchinato will be hoping to do better than Barazzutti did when he got into the final four, as he was thrashed 6-0 6-1 6-0 by Bjorn Borg, who went on to win the title.

  10. Post update

Cecchinato beats Djokovic to reach semi-final

I am sure the top half of the draw will not be too unhappy to see Dominic Thiem play Marco Cecchinato in the semi-final in the bottom half.

Remember, the last two men's quarter-finals, which will be played tomorrow are...

    • Rafael Nadal (1) v Diego Schwartzman (11)

Daramola Adedotun‏: As a Nadal fan, Cecchinato was the natural choice, no hard feelings towards Djokovic. Better luck next year.... Congrats Ceccinato, love to see you in the final Vs Rafa.

  12. 'Are you sure? Am I sleeping?'

Cecchinato beats Djokovic to reach semi-final

    And here is Marco Cecchinato...

Asked how it feels to beat Novak Djokovic: "Are you sure? Maybe I am sleeping. It's amazing. It's unbelievable for me. I am very happy because it is unbelievable to beat Novak Djokovic at a quarter-final in Roland Garros.

"I started very well on my serve and, phew... I was so tired, but I won the match... amazing.

"It is the first time in a semi-final in a Grand Slam. Now I need to think for the semi-final, summarise for recovery and I am very happy."

  15. Game, set and match - Cecchinato

    Marco Cecchinato 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 1-6 7-6 (13-11) Novak Djokovic

What a match. What a match.

And Marco Cecchinato has just dumped 12-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic out of the French Open.

Cecchinato does it in style with a beautiful one-handed rising backhand, which zooms by Djokovic and hits the line.

He was 4-1 down in the fourth set, looking like it was going to become 5-1 but takes the tie-break 13-11 after missing three earlier match points.
