    Chanda Rubin

American former world number six on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Halep forced Kanepi to blink first. That performance will give Halep a lot of confidence.

  4. Game, set and match - Halep

    Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 6-2 Kanepi

Simona Halep is into the second round!

That brings to an end her five-match losing streak and gains a bit of revenge for her US Open first-round exit at the hands of Kaia Kanepi.

She'll face America's Sofia Kenin next.

    Simona Halep
  5. Post update

    Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 5-2 Kanepi*

Ouch. A double fault first up from Kaia Kanepi.

She gets on the board as Halep falters with a return, but that backhand isn't working for the Estonian.

    Two match points for Halep.

  6. Post update

    Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 5-2 Kanepi*

Kaia Kanepi will serve to stay in the match.

  7. Post update

    Chanda Rubin

American former world number six on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

This has been a complete collapse. When you hit the ball as hard as Kanepi does you need conviction in your shots but she has lost that.

  8. Halep holds

    Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 5-2 Kanepi*

Kaia Kanepi, thanks to a bit of magic spray, is ready to resume.

Simona Halep targets her backhand, with Kanepi guiding a strike into the net for 40-15.

Wallop. Big first serve from Halep, and she's a game away from the second round.

  9. Post update

    *Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 4-2 Kanepi

Medical timeout for Kanepi, as she gets some treatment.

    Kaia Kanepi receives treatment
  10. Post update

Kaia Kanepi has sat down, waiting for the trainer.

    It is one nasty blister.

  11. Halep breaks

    *Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 4-2 Kanepi

    Halep gets the break!

A loose forehand from Kanepi, and Halep draws first blood in this final set.

  12. Post update

    Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 3-2 Kanepi*

Into the net again goes that backhand from Kaia Kanepi.

    Break point, Halep.

  13. Post update

    Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 3-2 Kanepi*

Kanepi's asked for a plaster - a blister on her finger, by the looks of it - but it doesn't stop her hitting a sublime forehand winner for a 40-15 lead.

It might be affecting her backhand though as she slices the ball into the net, and then another overcooked backhand takes us to deuce.

  14. Post update

    Chanda Rubin

American former world number six on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

If you give Kanepi a little bit of room, she is so powerful and so accurate.

Halep has to watch for any opportunity to come her way and be ready to pounce. But she has a good level of intensity and looks plugged in.

    Kaia Kanepi
  15. Still on serve

    Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 3-2 Kanepi*

Kaia Kanepi passes Simona Halep with ease down the line to go to 30-15 on the Romanian's serve.

A big forehand puts Halep within touching distance of a hold, and she's rewarded for sticking in a rally as Kanepi blazes a backhand into the net.

  16. Kanepi holds

    *Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 2-2 Kanepi

Kaia Kanepi looks set for a love hold of her own, before a big backhand goes over the baseline.

Not to worry. A serve out wide, and Simona Halep launches her own return out.

    All square.

  17. Kyrgios out

Nick Kyrgios is out of the Australian Open!

The home favourite has been beaten 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 by Milos Raonic. Just the 45 aces in that match...

It's the first time Kyrgios has gone out in the first round of his home tournament.

    Nick Kyrgios
  18. Ouch!

    Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 2-1 Kanepi*

Kaia Kanepi shanks a forehand - right into the chest of one of the ball kids!

Everyone winces, including Halep and Kanepi, who ask her straight away if she's okay. She laughs it off instantly. Give her a medal - that was full thwack from Kanepi.

Halep races through a love hold.

  19. Kanepi holds

    *Halep 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 1-1 Kanepi

Kaia Kanepi pushes Simona Halep out wide, and eventually Halep's backhand misses the mark.

Oh, and another clean winner from Kanepi hands her a hold!
