MotoGP hand Loris Capirossi safety role

Former 125cc and 250cc world champion Loris Capirossi has been appointed to advise on MotoGP safety following his retirement from racing.

"Loris Capirossi will offer MotoGP advice on matters relating to safety and also the new regulations," organisers said in a statement.

"His insight will be valuable as we introduce significant changes."

The death of Marco Simoncelli in Malaysia in October was the first fatality in a MotoGP race since 2003.

Capirossi, 38, made his grand prix debut in 1990 and started 328 races in his career.

His best season in MotoGP was in 2003 when he finished third.

"In recognition of Capirossi's outstanding contribution to the sport, organisers have also made the request to the FIM [International Motorcyling Federation] that his number 65 be retired from use in the MotoGP world championship," organisers added.
