Mildenhall Fen Tigers marked their return to the track with a narrow 45-44 win over much-fancied Dudley Heathens.
And they secured a National League victory at West Row with points shared evenly across the line-up.
"I'm thrilled for the team, the fans and of course the promotion who have worked so hard to bring Mildenhall back to life," said team manager Rob Henry.
"All the boys played their part and came up with the heat wins when we needed them.
"Beating the title favourites shows everyone we are back and we mean business."
Heathens captain Adam Roynon top scored with 14 and, despite none of the Fen Tigers breaking the 10 point barrier, Lewis Blackbird (nine), James Brundle, Jack Hargreaves and Aaron Baseby (all eight) combined for the victory.
