Poole Pirates rider Chris Holder was third at the British Grand Prix in Cardiff on Sunday.
The result moves the 23-year-old, who won the race last year, up to third in the World Championship table.
The Australian scored just one point in his first two rides of the meeting, and admits he was fortunate to make the final stage.
He said: "I was relieved to make the final. It wasn't a good situation to be in with just one point to my name."
He added: "We knew we had to do something. We made a change and it worked.
"We found some pace and I think I recorded the fastest time of the night on a couple of occasions, so that was good."
Holder returns to action for Poole against Belle Vue on Wednesday.
