Plymouth Devils lost their final match of the season 46-44 to table-topping Newcastle Diamonds.
Ben Barker (14+1) signed off the season for Plymouth with a paid maximum whilst team-mate Ryan Fisher (13+1) dropped only one point.
That was not enough to give the Devils the seven-point win they needed to make the end-of-season Plate competition.
The Diamonds had started the better of the two teams and opened up an early 11-19 lead after five heats.
Both sides then traded race wins but Plymouth managed to close the gap to just two points following a 5-1 in heat 13 courtesy of Fisher and Barker.
But the match was settled in the very next race as one-time Devils target Claes Nedermark and Christian Henry teamed up to give Newcastle a crucial 5-1 of their own and condemn Plymouth to the bottom of the league.
The loss is likely to be Mike Bowden's last as promoter of the club after it was announced he had accepted an offer for the club from a four-man consortium headed by former Devils rider Seemond Stephens and former Trelawney Tigers promoter Godfrey Spargo.
