David Knight recorded two fifth-place finishes at the opening round of the Enduro World Championships in Chile.
The three-time Enduro World Champion narrowly missed out on podium finishes in both days of competition in the competitive E2 class in Talca.
Italy's Alex Salvini leads the series after recording first and third place finishes at the opening round.
French riders Pierre Alexandre Renet and Johnny Aubert are second and third respectively.
Knight said: "I am very happy with my speed and more importantly I felt very comfortable in doing the times I did.
"It shows how fast we were pushing in E2 as I was much faster than the winner in E3 on both days - which was almost impossible for me last year.
"I'm definitely going in the right direction", the 34-year-old added.
The second round of the series will be held in San Juan, Argentina, next weekend.
