Driving for Van Amersfoort in Oschersleben, he said: "It didn't even cross my mind I was the best rookie."

His father is recovering under private care at his Switzerland home following a serious skiing accident in 2013.

He has signed for the Dutch Van Amersfoort Racing team for the Formula 4 season, which runs until October.

The younger Schumacher will have another chance to impress in two further races at Oschersleben on Sunday before the championship continues at circuits including the Red Bull Ring, Spa-Francorchamps and Hockenheim.
