Is she the most underrated sportswoman? Not even close. She's had a decent career that peaked at around the level of ability she had.For those saying females get better sponsorship though, that does happen, but only at certain levels, it's certainly harder to get sponsorship lower down the pyramid for them.
"Danica Patrick has finised 3rd in an Indy 500, a race that lasts around 3 hours and where the drivers pull over 4g 4 times a lap"And just turn left. Forget about the g figure. She's never even won a single race in her entire career, never mind a championship title at any level. Career best finishing 3rd in the 2004 Toyota Atlantic Championship with 0 wins in 24 races.
"Women in sport, as the article explains, have all the same challenges as the men, but amplified due to a lack of visibility or investment."No they don't Ben Dalrymple, it's the total opposite. They automatically get greater visibility and investment regardless of talent due to being female. The talent pool is tiny and female interest in Motorsport is minuscule, those are ever present issues.
She didn't have to fight "tooth and nail". Female drivers will get sponsorship and publicity just for being female."For each informed, thoughtful entry there is a dozen displaying ignorance, bigotry and prejudice or irrelevance."Yours being an example. Can't handle facts. Think they are "sexist, bigoted". The reality is the reverse of what you think. Run along to your safe space, un1man.
Its a pity, no one has cut it at the top level so fare. A few false dawns. Looking at some of the up & coming drivers currently, don't think it will long before one deliveries & then it will snowball.
Great to see a well written article about Katherine Legge featuring on the BBC Website. I have watched Kat race in the IMSA Series for many years now and she is a great driver. She drove the Deltawing and was faster than her male team mate.
@23 Danica Patrick has finised 3rd in an Indy 500, a race that lasts around 3 hours and where the drivers pull over 4g 4 times a lap. Patrick is 5 foot 2 inches tall and weighs 100 lbs. So much for your theory that women can't compete with men.
There are a few women racers I have followed over the years. Two of my favourites are Simona de Sylvestre and Divina Galica both of which have raced with passion for their sport and a determination to be successful in their professions. Simona is still racing in Australia’s Supercar series for Nissan and Divina who raced everything from Formula Atlantic to Truck racing in Europe. Both fearless.

I miss the grid girls 👭 since F1 got woke
Obviously didn't have to fight anything or anyone, despite the outrage headline. Really good victim inspiring piece, men are indeed evil. Her biggest achievements appear to be crashing cars and bad communication with engineers, didn't progress as the imagined early potential "suggested".Best of luck to any women drivers, there's never been any prevention, you'll get there if good enough. So no.
Yeah, my heart bleeds for her. Plenty "fight and claw" and don't get anywhere. And I highly doubt she was from a poor background to start with, most pro drivers aren't. Just another "well off" complaining how hard they've had it!Many impoverished motorsports fans and drivers would give their eye teeth to get started in motorsport, let alone have the sort of career she's had!
You forgot to mention Sabine Schmitz, now on "Top Gear". A double winner of the 24 hour Nurburgring race, and also driver of the "Nurburgring taxi", where several male paying passengers have thrown up after a full speed lap round the circuit.
Most of the time I decide not to bother reading HYS. For each informed, thoughtful entry there is a dozen displaying ignorance, bigotry and prejudice or irrelevance. Each time I look at HYS , I hope it might have improved but no, its still the same.
Here we go again, a 2nd rate driver who thinks she should get a top seat just because she is female. I am 100% for equal rights so men and women and gender x all play/drive or what ever in the same sport and then we would see no difference to now in most sports as females are just not able to compete against men. Now they have the excuse "its because I am a woman" & "Sexism". Please stop moaning.
Yawn it’s just as boring whether men drive or women.Further it is environmentally irresponsible sport.
I have huge respect for every racing driver, particularly those that have had to fight for every drive, however with all due respect to Katherine, she wasn't at a high enough level for the top drives and series.Watching her in DTM she was very poor, and in her 2 Formula E outings she was a liability.Whilst she is a better racer than you or I, I question where she would be if she were a man..
