Eugene Laverty missed out on a podium place in Sunday's World Superbike Championship round at Aragon in Spain.

The Yamaha World Superbike rider from Toomebridge came fourth in the opening race, which was won by Italian team-mate Marco Melandri.

Italy's Max Biaggi clinched victory in the second race with Laverty back in a disappointing sixth.

Laverty is fourth in the series standings and 109 points behind leader Carlos Checa of Spain.

Ballyclare rider Jonathan Rea missed the Aragaon races after undergoing surgery on the wrist fracture he sustained in the morning warm-up ahead of the World Superbike round at Misano last weekend.

Rea had hoped to return at Brno in the Czech Republic on 10 July, but that target now appears unrealistic.
