Queen's University Belfast and St Mary's College lost their first round ties in the Sigerson Cup on Wednesday night.
Queen's led 1-5 to 0-5 at the interval at The Dub but a strong second half display by NUI Maynooth saw them win by 0-13 to 1-8.
Earlier, NUI Galway defeated St Mary's 0-6 to 0-5 at Dangan, Galway.
UUJ will face NUIG in the quarter-finals after the Jordanstown side's win over UL on Tuesday.
UUJ beat Limerick 1-10 to 1-9 on Tuesday night.
Diarmuid McNulty hit the goal as the Ulster side came from behind to win.
The Poly boys are aiming to go one better than last year when they were beaten finalists in the All-Ireland colleges competition.
Queen's made the better of the opening half against NUI Maynooth, with a 25th minute Niall McKenna goal ensuring a three-point interval lead.
However, NUI Maynooth rallied to tie the game at 0-9 to 1-6 inside 10 minutes of the restart.
Michael Newman proved impressive for the visitors in the closing stages as Queen's exited the competition.
Maynooth now face UCD in the quarter-finals.
Despite the first-half dismissal of Kieran Conroy following a second yellow card NUIG led by 0-4 to 0-1 at the interval against Queen's.
Wind assisted St Mary's began the second half strongly and cut the deficit to a point within five minutes of the restart.
NUIG edged a 0-6 to 0-5 lead with seven minutes remaining, and despite huge pressure on the Galway defence late on from the likes of Tyrone's Peter Harte, John Maughan's charges held out for victory.
