Mixed fortunes for Down and Derry in National Hurling League

Down were heavily beaten while Derry earned a draw in their opening NHL Division 2A games on Sunday.

The Mournemen lost 3-17 to 1-6 against Carlow at Dr Cullen Park with Danny Toner netting for a Mourne team fielding six debutants.

Craig Doyle, Marty Kavanagh and Shane Kavanagh were on target for Carlow, who led 1-9 to 1-2 at the break.

The Oak Leafers scored the only goal as they secured a 1-11 to 0-14 draw with Wicklow in Aughrim.
