Down boss McCartan considers future after Mayo defeat

James McCartan

Down manager James McCartan said he will consider his position after the 3-18 to 2-9 defeat by Mayo in the All-Ireland SFC quarter-final in Dublin.

"I have to decide whether I can get anymore out of this team - it is something to be thought about," said the Mourne boss.

"It will probably be out of my hands. It is very deflating to be on the end of a beating like that.

"Mayo were the better team by far and were pulling up by the end."

The Mourne men trailed 2-7 to 1-4 at the break and Mayo dominated the second half to win with plenty to spare.

"They had the legs on us and caused us problems all over the field, particularly with their pace," added McCartan.

"It is a disappointed dressing room and I'm disappointed for the supporters that we couldn't put up a better performance.

"It is a sad end to the year and I think the players are better than that."
