Leinster Hurling Championship: Laois 1-16 0-13 Antrim

Antrim's Eddie McCloskey in action against Matthew Whelan of Laois

Antrim fell to a surprise six-point defeat by Laois in Saturday night's Leinster Hurling Championship first round game at O'Moore Park.

Tommy Fitzgerald got the goal with the hosts' first score of the game and the three-pointer proved crucial.

Laois will have a local derby in the last eight as they take on Carlow who comprehensively defeated London 4-17 to 2-13 earlier on Saturday.

Shane McNaughton and Neil McManus scored five points each for Antrim.

All bar three points of the O'Moore's tally came from open play in a game where Zane Keenan and Brian Dunne led by example for the hosts.

In a keenly-contested encounter, little separated the teams in the opening 35 minutes, with the score tied on two occasions.

However, Pat Critchley's side finished with four of the final six points before the break - Brian Dunne impressive with three points from play as they held a 1-6 to 0-7 interval lead.

The Saffrons matched the hosts point for point over the third quarter, but Laois held Antrim scoreless in the closing 14 minutes.
