Queen's University and St Mary's crash out of Sigerson Cup
Sigerson Cup hosts Queen's University will not be taking part in the latter stages of the competition after a shock defeat to GMIT at the Dub on Wednesday.
Queen's crashed to a 2-6 to 0-8 first round defeat to the unfancied visitors.
St Mary's Belfast are also out after losing 2-11 to 1-13 to reigning champions DIT in Dublin on Wednesday.
UUJ will play DIT in next week's quarter-final for a place in the Sigerson Cup finals' weekend, being staged at Queen's on 21/22 February.
Galway-Mayo IT raced into a four-point lead at the Dub in Belfast and 18 minutes had elapsed before Queen's got their first point, through Down player Ryan Mallon.
The Connacht visitors led by 0-6 to 0-2 at half-time but Queen's rallied in the third quarter and scored three unanswered points to close the gap to a point.
Shane Hennelly fisted home a goal for GMIT after 52 minutes but the home side again responded, with substitute Ross McGarry getting two quick points.
Queen's missed two easy chances to close the gap further in a poor performance and were made to pay when Aineas Lawless scored a second goal two minutes from the end.
St Mary's almost took the scalp of champions DIT but lost narrowly by a point at Parnells ground in Dublin.
