100 Team GB contenders for London 2012: Wendy Houvenaghel

Cycling (team pursuit)

Born: 27/11/74

Career highlights

She took silver in the individual pursuit behind Rebecca Romero at the Beijing Olympics but that event is no longer on the Olympic programme so she has switched her focus to the team pursuit. She is a three-time world champion in the team event and has won individual silver at each of the major championships.

She is also an excellent time trialist on the road, and has won the British title three times.

Career background

The Northern Irish cyclist studied at Dundee University before getting a job as a dentist with the Royal Air Force in Cornwall.

A latecomer to cycling, she took it up in 2002 aged 27 to keep her husband company on his cycling rides.

Personal

She will be 37 by the time the Olympics come around and says she will make a decision about her future after the Games, adding that she envisages returning to her dentistry career eventually.
