Olympic sport this week

The week's highlights include silver medals for Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah as the World Athletics Championships get underway, European bronze medals for England's men and women hockey teams and eventing bronze for GB in Germany.

ATHLETICS<p>

Great Britain had picked up three medals by the halfway stage of the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

London 2012 gold medal hopeful Jessica Ennis lost her heptathlon world title to Russia's Tatyana Chernova, having to settle for silver after what Ennis called "a big disaster" in the javelin.

There was a silver medal too for Mo Farah in the 10,000 metres, which left the 28-year-old with "mixed emotions" given that he had been unbeaten in 10 races. Gold went to Ethiopia's Ibrahim Jeilan.

And there was a bronze medal in the 110m hurdles for Andy Turner. The European champion initially finished fourth but was upgraded after the original winner, Dayron Robles, was disqualified for impeding Liu Xiang. American Jason Richardson was awarded the gold in 13.16 seconds with Liu upgraded to silver.

The most high-profile disqualification came in the men's 100m final. Usain Bolt - the Olympic and defending world champion - sensationally false started, paving the way for his fellow Jamaican, Yohan Blake, to win in 9.92 seconds.

HOCKEY<p>

England won bronze medals in both the men's and women's tournaments at the European Championships in Moenchengladbach, Germany.

England's men - the reigning European champions - lost their crown with a 3-0 defeat to hosts Germany in a semi-final that was interrupted by heavy rain. They overcame that disappointment in the bronze medal play off, beating Belgium 2-1 thanks to James Tindall's golden goal winner.

The women were beaten 2-0 by Olympic champions the Netherlands in their semi-final. But a 2-1 victory over Spain gave them a fourth consecutive European bronze medal, with Helen Richardson scoring both goals.

England's conquerers in both the men's and women's events went on to win gold. Germany beat the Netherlands 4-2 in the men's final, while the Dutch women's team won their eighth European crown in ten attempts by beating Germany 3-0.

JUDO<p>

There was a disappointing lack of medals for Britain at the World Championships in Paris, with Colin Oates' fifth place in the -66kg category the closest GB came to the podium.

Britain's biggest medal hope, Euan Burton, lost in the second round of the -81kg competition to the eventual runner-up, Srdjan Mrvaljevic of Montenegro.

Karina Bryant impressed in the women's heavyweight competition with back-to-back victories by ippon, only to be denied a place in the semi-finals by 2010 world silver medallist Qian Qin of China.

22-year-old French heavyweight Teddy Riner was the week's outstanding performer, winning a record fifth world title before leading France to victory in the team event. Of the 16 gold medals on offer, Japan and France won 11 between them.

EQUESTRIAN<p>

Great Britain's reign as European team eventing champions came to an end as hosts Germany won gold in Luhmuhlen.

Britain - who have won 22 of the last 30 major team titles - had to settle for bronze, with France in second.

Germany's reigning world champion Michael Jung and La Biosthetique-Sam also won individual gold, with William Fox-Pitt on Cool Mountain finishing as Britain's highest-placed individual rider in seventh.

GB team manager Yogi Breisner hailed an "awesome" performance by Germany, who ended a 38-year wait for the title. "Their performance would have been good enough to win any major championship in the last 25 years," he said.
