Becky Downie hopes to help London 2012 gymnastics team

Becky Downie hopes her return from injury can help boost Great Britain's attempt to secure the maximum number of gymnasts for the London 2012 Olympics.

The Nottingham gymnast, 19, suffered an Achilles injury in January but will compete in the World Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo this weekend.

The men's and women's teams must finish in the top eight to be sure of the maximum number of gymnasts in London.

"We're all fired up to go to Japan and give it our best shot," Downie said.

Great Britain has never achieved maximum gymnast numbers at an Olympics.

"Hopefully we'll get both teams through, which will be a big relief," Downie told BBC East Midlands Today.

"We can then go back in the gym, up the difficulty, and get even better.

"My main goal after the injury was just to recover, any competitions was a bonus. I had Japan at the back of my mind but I had to take it one step at a time."

The World Gymnastics Championships begin on Friday and finish on 16 October.
