World champions France remain on course to defend their Olympic men's handball title after overcoming Spain 23-22 in the quarter-finals.

The Spanish had led until the 45th minute but William Accambray settled a thriller inside the final 30 seconds.

France now face a semi-final on Friday with Croatia, who beat Tunisia 25-23.

The other semi-final will be contested between Hungary, who defeated Iceland 34-33 after double extra-time, and Sweden, 24-22 winner over Denmark.

Niclas Ekberg shot into an empty net with just over a minute to play to keep Sweden on course to add to their three previous silver medals in the event in 1992, 1996 and 2000.

In another thrilling contest, Iceland led 27-26 against Hungary and had a penalty with just 15 seconds remaining.

But it was missed and Hungary forced the additional time three seconds from the end.
