Glover and Stanning might not be the biggest names in a powerful squad but they could make history by becoming Britain's first ever female rowing gold medallists on Wednesday.

After taking silver at last year's World Championships behind New Zealand, Glover and Stanning won all three World Cup races this season and set an Olympic record in their heat. The only question is whether they can produce that form in the biggest race of all.

The British men's eight, which includes 40-year-old Greg Searle, has been improving rapidly and looks the closest challenger to three-time World champions Germany in their final.

Tour de France winner Wiggins will attempt to complete a glorious summer by adding Olympic gold in the time trial to the three he previously won in the velodrome. A medal of any sort will take him past Sir Steve Redgrave as the British Olympian with the most medals, a total of seven. He goes at 15:07:30 BST. Team-mate Chris Froome, the Tour de France runner-up, could be among his rivals for a medal. He starts at 15:00:00 BST.

Beijing silver medallist Emma Pooley has the pedigree in the women's race but believes the flat course at Hampton Court harms her chances, while Lizzie Armitstead has the boost of silver in the road race as she looks to go one better.

The British pair qualified first and third from the semi-finals, raising hopes of a second swimming medal in the pool for the home nation, while Jemma Lowe has an outside chance in the women's 200m butterfly final.

The showdown between Australia's James 'The Missile' Magnussen and Brazilian world record holder Cesar Cielo should be a classic in the men's 100m freestyle.

  • GYMNASTICS (16:30-18:57): Dan Purvis, men's all-around

Following Britain's superb bronze medal in the team event, Purvis is a genuine medal contender in the individual all-around event after finishing fourth at last year's World Championships and qualifying in fifth in London. Team-mate Kristian Thomas made it through in 10th place.

Japan's brilliant Kohei Uchimura is the favourite to land gold, having won three consecutive World titles since taking silver in Beijing.

The first ever Olympic mixed doubles tournament gets under way with some interesting pairings, including Australia's Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Stosur, and Argentines Juan Martin del Potro and Gisela Dulko.

Britain's Murray and Robson are up against Lucie Hradecka and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic. With a draw of just 16 teams, two victories will guarantee a medal match.

Joshua, 22, made a huge impact with silver at last year's World Championships in Baku and has a high-profile opening bout against Cuba's Erislandy Savon, nephew of the former three-time Olympic heavyweight champion Felix Savon.
