Chloe Magee bowed out of the women's badminton singles at the European Games in Baku despite victory on Wednesday.

The Donegal player won her final Group F match against Belgium's Lianne Tan 11-21, 22-20, 21-12 but an inferior points difference caused her to miss out on qualifiying for the last 16.

Irish men's doubles pair Joshua and Sam Magee beat their Czech opponents 2-0 to progress to the quarter-finals.

Ards' swimmer James Brown failed to make the 200m individual medley final.

The 18-year-old finished 18th fastest in qualifying and looked to have just missed out on the semi-finals by 0.18 seconds, but was promoted from first reserve.

He subsequently finished eighth in Wednesday's semi-final.

Number one seed in the men's badminton singles, Dublin's Scott Evans, reached the last 16 with a Group A win over Gergely Krausz.

The Magee brothers were pushed hard in the opening game of their quarter-final against Czech duo Pavel Florian and Ondrej Kopriva, but always stayed a comfortable distance ahead before winning 21-16.

They romped home 21-7 in the second game.
