China's Liu Hong narrowly defeated Mexico's Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez to win the women's 20km walk.

Liu, the 29-year-old world record holder, won in a time of one hour 28 minutes and 35 seconds - finishing two seconds ahead of Gonzalez after making a thrilling dash to the line.

China's Lu Xiuzhi, 22, came third, seven seconds behind her compatriot.

Italy's Antonella Palmisano, 25, was the best-placed European in fourth, 28 seconds off the pace.
