We've peaked now and by Tokyo we've a good shot at maintaining a plateau but no more. Japan will invest heavily in certain sports so their medal tally will rise as home nation. China has public upset over being beaten by GB so they will have reignited their sports development initiatives and will be back with a vengeance. Russia will be back and other nations will increasingly seek to mimic GB.
What about the top 100 television pundits for 2020? We had some right rubbish at Rio and we (the taxpayers) paid for their jolly. Watched team gymnastics on iPlayer and had neutral commentators who KNEW the statistics and didn't rely on shouting how great the Brits were in the style of Matt Somebody on the BBC. Remember Coleman, Waring, Wolstenholme who did commentaries on their own. WASTEFUL
The next Olympics will be ram-packed with talent and it may well be standing room only or even lying on the floor. So prospective entrants will need to train, train, train until their heads are spinning like a dodgy politician. So, in summary: train; ram-packed; lying; spinning; dodgy politician.
FGS BBC, give it a rest, have you not milked the Olympics enough at our expense!!!!
262 You are completely wrong, the money is handed out to the sports that can actively prove/show they have the ability to win a medal, If they cannot or fail to win a medal during the Olympics when they have previously been sponsored the governing body either reduces the money or takes it away all together. If an upcoming sport can prove they can win a medal they will receive sponsorship.
262 charlieboy Think you will find , if you do your research, that investment is reaching all levels! Investment is being received by clubs that are available to all , grass roots n all!
Afraid @248 is right, though I would not use his form of words. The general public is sponsoring those who are well off. I would put the millions we spend to better effect on grassroots. It is not money well spent. Sure we win medals but there is no long term effect or investment. Just helping out a few with their own personal ambitions. Should all be self financed or sponsored.
Sorrysorrysorry Waiting for your response as to whether you wish to claim 2nd at Rio but relinquish your 1st place in Beijing to USA ???
@259 Don't feed the trolls! This guy needs an Olympic gold for the two colossal chips on both shoulders he has been carrying around all his life! What possible significance is it where any athlete sat his o levels ! Does it mean they are more commited, train with more passion, row harder , run faster, cycle harder than another who went to a state school- think not !
@ 243 The ProphylaticWhatever happens the team GB stars will be privately educated. 3rd of medals won by toffs (from a 7% population base). Shocking. No, what's shocking pal is that you are so bigoted, bitter & twisted that you even think this is an issue.Perhaps you need to discuss your concerns with Diane Abbot, who sends her kids to a fee paying private school - is she a toff ?
6 years ago, Andy Turner, 110m hurdles, his funding was cut, based on the assumption that he would not be a medal hopeful for the following year. Hope this will apply to some older British failure at Rio 2016 e.g Martyn Rooney (400m runner), Tonia Couch (diving), Shara Proctor (long jump)
255It does the independent schools no problem at all to have a future gold medalist at their school. So no wonder they offer massive discounts on the fees. In one case a school allegedly gave a 100% exemption of fees and paid for all uniform.
#248: "The proportion of privately educated Olympic winners matches ..."Has it ever occurred to you that privately educated people succeed in sport, politics, business, etc. because they are superior to the rest of the population? Smarter, more knowledgeable, better prepared for life's challenges, and most of all hungry for success ...
@248. Posted by The Protector Oh dear, another day at the foreign Troll factory:'Right the UK is getting to far ahead, so your script until instructed otherwise is to go on and on about the best divisive thing our embassy could come up with: some rubbish about private vs non-private education'No deviation from this or its back to the canning factory.
248. The ProtectorCheck out UK top earners, Football, Football, Football , Tennis, Golf.Olympic sports... nowhere, except Rose and Murray who went to school where? You are blinded by your own prejudice.
Tom Daley was never as good as the media made out. Is he good? Yes. Is he exceptional? No. The Chinese athletes are far far superior.
@148 sorrysorrysorry If by your method of ranking the medal leaders then unfortunately China therefore did not come first in the Beijing Olympics ! USA 110 medals , China 100 ! Sorry sorry sorry
