World Rowing: Alan Campbell into singles sculls final

Coleraine rower Alan Campbell won his semi-final to safely qualify for Saturday's single sculls final at the World Championships in Slovenia.

After a typically strong start, the British team member took victory from defending champion Ondrej Synek and Marcel Hacker.

Campbell led all the way although there was a suspicion that Synek eased off in the closing stages.

The Britain won bronze in last year's World Championships.

Campbell's performance qualifies a British boat in the event for next year's London Olympics.

New Zealand's Mahe Drysdale won Friday's second semi-final with Olympic champion Olaf Tufte and Sweden's Lassi Karonen also progressing to Saturday's decider.

Campbell has struggled for fitness and form this season but appears to be back to his best in Bled.
