England to take on Super League overseas Exiles XIII

England will face a Super League international XIII called the Exiles in a mid-season game at Leeds on 10 June.

A 34-man provisional squad comprising players from all teams will be trimmed down by public vote.

Former Leeds and New Zealand boss Brian McClennan will coach the Exiles, who are led by former Australia captain Danny Buderus.

"I'll be privileged and honoured but anyone in that team could be captain - I just get to lead them out," he said.

Former New South Wales State of Origin captain Buderus said he was very excited by the prospect of the game.

"It's a great squad. Hopefully it takes off and in a few years it grows to a three-game series."

The game replaces the usual mid-season international against France, which has been ditched as so many players from the one Super League side, Catalan Dragons.

But England coach Steve McNamara was keen for the Exiles game to be taken as seriously as an international.

"It's a very serious stand-alone fixture. It isn't a Harlem Globetrotters type game, it's not a gimmick, it's a very important game in its own right," he said.

"They have very, very good players to choose from. The England players are very excited by the prospect and the overseas players I've spoken to are very intent on making this a very intense and robust game.

"I think it could be one of the best games of the year."
