Gateshead Thunder have appointed former player Kevin Neighbour as first-team coach at the International Stadium.
The 27-year-old, who retired as a player at the end of the 2010 season, has been coaching at Northumbria University.
"He's a talented up-and-coming coach, with vast playing experience," said director of rugby Chris Hood.
"He also has a great amount of experience of being a Gateshead Thunder player and knowing what players need."
Hood added: "He has also shown his ability to coach after a hugely successful season coaching Northumbria University in the Student Super Eight competition and leading Northumbria to the third round of the 2011 Challenge Cup for the first time in their history."
Neighbour made 211 appearances for the Tynesiders in two spells, racking up 330 points in the process.
Meanwhile Hood is still considering candidates for the vacant head coach role at Gateshead, after Richard Pell's departure this week.
