Gateshead Thunder have signed Ashley Thackeray for the remainder of the Championship One season.
The former England Under-18 winger, now 23, has made the switch from National Conference side East Hull.
Thunder director of rugby Chris Hood told the club's website: "He is a fantastic player.
"We are delighted to have signed Ashley who has been the target of several Championship clubs. We are geniunely excited about the rest of the season."
Thackeray's former clubs include Hull FC and Sheffield Eagles.
Last season, when playing for Sheffield, he picked up a serious injury that required surgery and eventually led to him leaving the club.
He then moved into the amateur game with East Hull.
Hood persued Thackeray after a tip off that he wanted to get back into the professional game.
"I gave him a ring and I've have been speaking to him for a few weeks and explaining what we can give him as a club," he said.
After training with Thunder, Thackery was offered a deal which he was delighted to accept.
He said: "I've been out of the professional game for about a season but after speaking to Chris, I am excited about playing for Thunder for the rest of the season.
"Thunder is a club that is always well spoken about by players who are here or have played for the club and in my short time with the club, I can see why."
Gateshead are currently bottom of table on two points, having played 15 games, lost 14 and drawn one.
